Does anyone else find it rude when people ask how much you paid for your car? If so do you have nice way to tell them none of your business?

I honestly think it depends on the context and situation....I just bought mine and some people think I paid $20k+ (my car is not in that shape whatsoever) and others are curious because they, too, don't know how realistic it is for some of these cars (e.g. not original engine, paint changes, etc...). Is it rude? Possibly but again it depends on the context in my opinion - I would be more likely to tell someone who is considering getting a C3 how much I paid than someone yelling out at the window at me from a stoplight.

I say, "I keep that private in case I want to sell it someday"

It also depends on how long you have owned the car, bought my 69 in 73 and paid $3,500 so that usually causes a "wow" reaction.

Yea the context scenario is very true. I've asked people who bought their classics brand new way back when they were made how much it cost but that's a "wow" factor more than anything else

It may be rude, and it definitely is poor "USA" manners. I have a neighbor from a different culture who asks what everything costs, from your house to your dog. That may be normal in his culture. No matter how ridiculously low a number you tell him, he has a cousin that can get it for half price.

Its not rude, but its in the context of how you ask.
Ive spent time talking to guys and will eventually ask them how much it cost them, because I want to know if its something I can afford.

I have no problem with people asking cost, my experience is they are just generally curious in what classic cars are worth.
My response is always, you want to know what I paid? how much it's worth? or how much I'm into it? because the three numbers are not even close to each other.
99% of the time the response is "what's it worth"? So I just tell them as it's not a real big secret and something they could figure out on their own if they cared enough to invest several hours using the internet.

I find more rudeness in some of the things people spew on this forum sitting behind their keyboard...
I do understand some people don't want to think/talk about how upside down they are in their car..so the question causes embarrassment.
So even if a person finds a question rude the right answer is to be a ruder, snarky curmudgeon back to them to further the stigma vette owners are a bunch of dbags?
The winner

Depends on who is asking and why. I have no problem divulging what I paid, when and why...as well as all the money I have spent since. Really don't care if somebody thinks I'm a fool and they are so much more clever than me. I'm not bragging and by no means rich. I have worked and saved my entire life to be able to finally buy one of these cars. What I really want to do is inform those interested about how much money this hobby really costs and to drive up the market value of these cars...as opposed to many on this forum who seem hell bent on convincing the entire world they are not worth it.
