What did you soak this in? Any chance of you coming to Vancouver Canada and help with my frame lol
Amazing results. I just pulled this from my soaking tank, wiped it off, took this picture. It was covered in rust when I took it off the 72 coupe frame. All better now.
Attachment 47913636
This will be a POR 15 coated part and then back into service.
Sweet.

I use a larger plastic tank filled with ten gallons of this product called Metal Rescue. You can buy it at home depot or order it through home depot for home delivery. My home depot carries a gallon size jug but not the five gallon pail so I order them and get free delivery. Product is made in Michigan.
I like that it is safe on your hands and you can leave an item in there and soak until the rust is gone.
Have used it about six months now with terrific results. Key to it is to have the temperature above 60F to work faster and to have an enclosed chamber for the parts.
Best regards,
David

Does it have a sweet smell and turn to molasse when dried?
That would be cool so have alternative/competition because Evaporust is priced beyond the reasonable here in Canada.

From the product website and you description this seems to be a mollase-based chelating product like Evaporust.

It does not smell particularly sweet but is not metallic smelling either. Not at all an acetic acid type of product but the tank (liquid) turns very dark and the rust settles loosely on the bottom of the plastic tank. Nothing turns molasses though, the surface turns gray as the rust disappears. I have left parts that are really rusty soaking for a week with no damaging affects. I will try to post some pictures this weekend as I have been gone a week and parts have been soaking since I left.
More soon.
Thanks to all and glad to be home.

I located a manual steering setup for this car and had it's manual steering box rebuilt by Bair's and it arrived during my travels abroad.
Photos to follow in the next couple of days but we should be able to make progress again now that I am home for a few days.
Cheers to all.

Latest purchase to be used with the 72 Orange restoration is this body storage and rotisserie platform for working under and over the body.
I have not taken delivery of it yet but I look forward to putting the 72 Ontario orange coupe and the 72 road racer on this and using the full capability it offers.
The car sitting upon it in this picture is not mine Ontario orange car, and isn't it fascinating the OP did have that same car, but I will post them when I have it and have my car mounted upon it.
Stay tuned and thanks for watching.

Just curious, what does a man with "such disposable Corvette income" do for a living? Thanks for posting you're build(S). Great work!

I am retiring from Michigan State University the end of this month.
I have my own consulting company now and work with some great clients.
In my spare time I work with Corvettes and really enjoy the hobby.
Just wish I had a bigger garage. LOL.

Great!!! Very happy for you. I'm glad you are doing what you love and restoring old vettes back to there former glory. Keep posting and know you have alot of guys on the forum cheering you on. God Bless ya! Maybe if your good Santa will bring you a bigger garage someday. Take care!
Santa has already been very good to me so no complaints if the garage remains as it stands for years to come.
Thanks again.

Melting Slicks
72 manual frame is on top of the pile.
Heading for powder coating in the next few weeks.
Bottom picture is my 3.36 differential case that I stripped. It is painted in a semi-gloss black rust oleum and it ready to be put back together.
However, international travel about to happen now so projects entering a hold phase until I can return.
Cheers to all.

I got the top coated in POR 15 this morning and man is it hot outside.
While I was out there and had the parts ready I did the half shafts for the 72 coupe.
And the rear cross member for the 72 racer, the 72 coupe, and the transmission cross member for the 72 racer. (I am using an automatic frame for ease of installation and removal of transmission in the years ahead).
I will let all of this dry today and tonight, then flip them over and get the bottom of the frame and all spots I may have missed with the first coating.
I am planning to apply a final coating of POR 15 Chassis Black product which is supposed to be harder and more durable than the POR 15 regular product, and the can says when you use POR 15 Chassis Black Over your POR 15 paint you get a "Permanent Finish". I don't ever intend to paint these frames again, so permanent is what I am looking for.
Thanks for watching, I need to take a shower.....

The chassis black keeps the POR 15 from turning purple.
I applied it to my 48 ****** cj that I restored in 08.
My ****** sits outside most of the time, in all weather.
The coating is holding up excellent, kinda got a slight grey tint to it after all these years, but no rust.
Also where in WV did you have your chassis work done?

in anticipation of my 72 manual chassis returning from the powder coaters I decided to lay out my chassis parts and see what I have or may still need for the rolling chassis build.
Inventory has been completed and a parts list is now completed and I have my marching orders for the parts to procure. So I moved over to the engine to take the top portion off and see what I want to do with it.
Engine is pretty clean and had been rebuilt prior to my ownership.
The original intake was available to me so I took it and will put it aside for now. I will dig it back out this winter and clean it up, repaint it, and store it for a future owner.
The intake that was on the engine is shown here on the left. The intake I will be putting on the engine is shown here on the right, along with a new carburetor, and a new distributor. I will keep the original intake, carb, and distributor with the car but I will opt for a better performing combination with these new components.
A mixture of new and old to keep the car as close to stock as possible and yet give it a chance to show its spunk.
I will also clean up this transmission a bit more but it is in great shape and I am excited to see that it was so well cared for and appears to be in great shape.
I will have the engine sealed up and ready for paint by the end of the week, then stage the engine and transmission awaiting the return of the frame.
Having fun, hope you are all doing well.
Best regards,
David

New tires are on order for the 72 coupe. I have the original wheels in good shape and will swap them out with the new tires soon.
I finished restoring the gas tank support strap and it is now resting on the back of the car along with a new rubber tank strap.
Gas tank is new, have new gas tank straps as well so that is ready to go when the chassis is ready. You can see the gas tank in the background, the new muffler system is in the foreground, and the replacement T-Tops are shown here as well.
Next I will restore the original radiator, the original radiator shroud, emergency brake cable, and one of those three drive shafts. Not sure which one is correct yet, but I will soon.
Restored and powder coated frame will be back home on the 15th, then I will get busy, busy, busy. Stay tuned.

I like that it is safe on your hands and you can leave an item in there and soak until the rust is gone.
Have used it about six months now with terrific results. Key to it is to have the temperature above 60F to work faster and to have an enclosed chamber for the parts.
Best regards,
David
