Side pipes on C3s... how easy is it to burn your legs.
My wife sees side pipes and cringes. She is afraid of burning her legs when she gets in and out. Is this a real issue?

Yes. I had 'em on my '68 L36 Roadster. More than 1 person got some nasty burns and then scars from them. Get in the habit of warning your riders to be careful as they step out. It happens fast and hurts like hell. Kids will cry, your gal will kick your ....

Very real! Consider shields.

It IS a problem. I fixed it- my wife does not open the door to get in or out. If we've been driving, I open the door for her and put a thick towel over the pipe. Never had any problem. Don't plan on having one.

No problem with the original '69 factory pipes and covers. Passengers in cars with aftermarket versions need to wear pants. I just burned my leg (deep 2nd degree) while moving my Harley unexpectedly from storage back to the house...wearing shorts and tennis shoes. Serious infection, swollen leg and still not healed after 5 weeks. I knew better and have never ridden without jeans and boots my entire life. It only takes one moment of stupidity.

Very VERY real! I always remind everyone to watch the pipes every time they get out. My ex still blistered and scarred her leg. She always thought she was smarter than me anyway. Shields are nice, I just dont like them. My wife is only 5' 1" so kind of similar to TimAT, I took a hand towel and tucked it long ways under the door sill molding so it folds between the seat and door sill. If she wears shorts or thinks she needs it,
she just flips it over the pipe, gets out,
and flips it back in.

The factory sidepipes sold in 1969 are not a problem. The look really great and the sidepipe covers are sufficiently insulated to prevent burns. Problems? The the factory sidepipes are very expensive, ..Paragon...they are noisier than regular mufflers and are more restrictive. They will cool the interior and working on the trannie or rear end suspension is soooo much easier.

Here's a picture of the original style sidepipes with covers. The cover definitely gets warm but neither my wife or I have gotten a burn. After 2 or 3 times your brain figures out to put your foot out a few more inches from the door than other cars so the backs of your legs clear the pipes. I like the look of the covers, YMMV.

This is why i keep telling people to buy the ceramic coated ones!!!!! i have laid my shin and calve bare skinned several times felt the heat and moved before i got burnt !!!
If you do this with chrome or stainless and feel the heat its too late your gonna loose skin and have a huge blister!!!!!
yes they arent as shinny or fancy but id rather have dull and no burns and now thy have whats called a show shine which is very close to chrome!!!!

I have aftermarket side pipes on my 78. I also have steel shield covers (see post 7 ) he has the steel side pipe covers. I burned myself twice, but I was working in the engine compartment and got into the side pipes in front of the shield. Regardless, I love the look and sound of my car with the sidepipes so I will learn to live with them. You do have to be careful at cruise ins to be sure someone walking up to look at the engine doesn't get into them until they cool.
