Mileage thread "challenge"
I couldn't find the gas mileage thread, or I would have posted there, but a member said that he doubts anyone getting over 20 mpg and if they do it's because they don't know how to figure mileage...toobroke, I'm looking in your direction I said "CHALLENGE ACCEPTED".
Here's what I did. 66 mile round trip. Only about 10 miles in town. All else 55mph and 65 mph zones, about 2/3 in the 66 mph. 87 octane, NO ETHANOL, TCW3 added to gas tank. I actually sabatoged my test a little...It was too nice of a day to go for a cruise in God's country... I took the T-tops off.
1979 L-48. bone stock down to the exhaust. 52,856 original miles.
Start 52790
Finish 52856
fuel 2.8 gallons
23.6 mpg.
CHALLENGE COMPLETED!!!

getting 20 or better highway isn't really that hard I don't need a bunch of strip mall degrees or sliding tools to know that....but can someone do it with a double pumper.......

Yes, it also helps seal the rings. I earned about 1.5 mpg in my Tahoe with it. 1 oz per 5 gallons.
This might be fun seeing what everybody can get when they are trying.
LOL!! I could just videotape the whole thing...

I believe you. Mr. TOO Much will probably not. He will probably say you need to use a slide rule to be accurate

I wish I was getting mileage like that. I ran 142 miles recently, all in town (>40 mph). Put 12.88 gallons in it, along with a can of seafoam. 11 MPG.
But, given that my entire drivetrain needs an overhaul, I'll take it. My 2004 Bravada with it's 4.10 rear end only does about 12 in town.

EH, no big deal, bought my '72 old show car with ~150k miles on it in '95.....336 rear, Muncie, L48 and L98 injection......24 mpg at near 4k rpm up down I 95 looking for a house here in Florida....24 mpg.....
NO OVERDRIVE!!!! 80 MPH both ways.....just keeping up with traffic this was in '97
today call it a L98/ZZ4 engine with LT1 induction and HEI and a 200 4r for the ODrive......and to be honest I do nothing on the freeways these daze....BUT a tank of gas lasts about 1.5 months.....nuff said.....
Forgot to mention, it's my DD.....

I can do 18/19 on the highway with the air on, 75, 350, top end mods, t/b 400, 308 rear.
Its the city driving that eats-up the gas, 8-9 in the city? Just don't get it!

I averaged about 16.5 mpg on my 1100 mile trip from Dallas/TX to Lakeland/FL, going 70 mph on average with probably 5 percent slower traffic. If I would have gone 55 mph instead, especially if tailgating trucks, I believe that I could easily break 20 mpg.

Mister Too Much would probably tell him to do a 200 mile run starting with his tank filled ALL THE WAY then when he completes the run fill the tank ALL THE WAY because gas pump nozzles can will shut off at the first sign of gasoline entering the sensing hole in the nozzle. If you intend to check your fuel mileage fill your tank with the nozzle set on it's lowest volume setting during both fill ups. Had he made sure his tank was completely filled both times his gas mileage would have been 2/3 of what it was.

First you will have to get out that video camera you mentioned. Then we will need a calibrated thermocouple to measure the temperature of the fuel – Density varies with temp, right?
Using the gas pump to meter your fuel back in, is just too inaccurate. We will need certified containers. You know those fuel pumps can be
.3% off –Right?
We will also need to measure you rear tire diameters for odometer accuracy, no no the air inside tires heats up with use, so the diameter will grow – even at 20psi. My head is starting to hurt.
It is a shame my C3 gets 28-29mpg, but I don’t know how to measure it. And yes it does get that mileage, having a .50 sixth gear and modern engine with sequential fuel injection helps a lot.
