You can start with the three "C"s of good muffler sounds.

Cubes
Compression
Cam

My magnaflows have some drone and some noise but you know its a 350, 9 to 1, and 216 degree cam, just not enough!

you got that right, the engine makes the notes...

stock 350 CFI, stock compression, stock cam...end of story, never changing it...been down that harrowing road before....

Depending on what kind of sound you want out of the car, you could do any one of the following:

1. Dump the stock mufflers and install Magnaflows;
2. Install chambered exhaust system, instead of mufflers;
3. If you just want a 'lopey' idle, swap a couple of ignition wires at the distributor.

If you want it to sound like a Ferrari youre gonna need a flat crank or 180 degree headers. The distinctive sound of a american V-8 comes from the cross plane crank and how the exhaust pulses enter the exhaust system.

Unfortunately living in Cal. you most likely have to keep the cat, as you know on the 82 it flows to a single pipe thru the cat big sound killer. You may want change to true duel set up with 2 cats and good aftermarket mufflers.

i think smog laws won't allow messing with the stock cats... what is you version of a good muff?

You'll need to drop a Ferrari engine in. A BMW V12 fits, so the Ferrari should as well, right?

Have you ever been in a car with an exhaust drone for long periods of time? Gets old real fast... I'll take my '82's quiet cruise all day long. At least I don't have to raise my voice so my passenger can hear me.

ya, i have experienced drone, i had a Corsa on my built c4 no drone, but it was loud!

the C3 has a lot of wind noise,( old car , not all the good condition seals fit right)

can't i have it both ways? quiet on a cruise and putzzing around and a little bark when on the gas?

Since the car isnt OBD-2 you can replace the cat with a high flow unit. It has to be there and has to be in the same place but beyond that you can do what you want. Just a modern replacement monolith type cat will flow and sound better than the stock pellet type.

Has to be E.O.'d and according to the CARB rules, an E.O.'d cat can't be advertised as "high flow"... of course, anything compared to the stock cat is high-flow.

Double the cams and exhaust valves , add four cylinders and put a hand made tuned exhaust . With capability of running 7K all,day.....and your corvette will sound like that too ....kinda anyway.

Your car is a CSB ....it will never sound like a Ferrari ......it has its own unique sound ....to get the true Ferrrari sound ....

You'll be needing a ...

Ferrari

This is true, even a 60s V8 Ferrari sounds completely different from a 60s small block. They run a completely different firing order which is why it sounds like it does. Like a Ferrari....

I still run the stock set up but without the cat on my 82 (after 25 years old no more smog test here) and it sounds great to me. I run Corsa & Flowmaster on my C4 ZR-1's and the is sound great with no drone.
