Default Best SS calipers at lowest cost for future purchase

Hello all,

A friend has a '77 who he is trying to sell for a friend (i know-i know) it's been repainted, a semi ugly custom interior including door panels embroidered "Raul" & seats with "RW" stitching.
OK, it runs with an aluminum manifold and edelbrock carb. Original 4 speed, it moves but doesn't stop.
I can probably get it cheap but I think even cheap it needs too much to get it back to stock so I may try and turn it into a racer for like a salt flat deal.

Anyhow, if I get it the brakes needs to be addressed first, so recommendations for calipers would be appreciated.

Also, comments telling me I should run away will be appreciated as well because I need another project like ... well you know ...

Thanks, Frank

Most of the rebuilt calipers at the auto parts stores are now SS sleeved.
The ones AutoZone were carrying a couple of years ago were sleeved.

Default Brakes

Before you buy calipers etc., why not find out why the brakes do not work well. Have the old calipers ever been sleeved? Are the calipers Delco Moraine? Is the M/C OK? Are the rubber brake lines old? Is there air in the system? How about the pads? Is there any run out on the rotors? If the calipers are sleeved in stainless steel, you could rebuild all four, with O-rings and new pistons, in an afternoon for about $150. Good luck. Jerry

I bought one at Advance Auto about 3 years ago. It lasted only 2 years before it started leaking again. Yes it had a lifetime warranty but I think it should have lasted longer.

I purchased a kit from Summit Racing. The calipers are made by Stainless Steel Brake Corporation.

You make a good point Jerry -
I was thinking that I would replace everything - lines, calipers, master etc. This car has been sitting for a couple years, master was dry and the current owner said there was a leak from the right rear that dripped on the tire.
I have not gotten the car yet but I will give it the once over as you suggested.
Thanks !

You can check for previously sleeved calipers by just pulling the brake pad retaining pin and removing the pads. You can see the SS sleeve around the bore of the piston, if it is there

FYI, Autozone has a 20% discount on on-line purchases over $100. Use promo code WIND20, the last day is Oct 17 and shipping is also free. Makes a set of 4 calipers about $230.

how exactly are you checking for a sleeve with the dust boot in place?
