I totally agree the OP is doing the right thing replacing his tires. What I thought was interesting was the fact the tires on this blue convertible were new. It certainly shows the kind of damage that can occur with a failure.

Pictures are worth a thousand words - or is it thousands of $$!

And... I like your Cobras! Great Deal!

make sure to check the date stamp on the new tires in case they are NOS (New Old Stock) i bought some BFG's when i was restoring my car and didn't know about the date stamp at the time...turns out they were already 4 years old when i bought them :-(

This was probably speed rating related but they sure let go with a bang...lots of damage on a metal car , fiberglass car would be really messed up

I have a 75 with some old tires on them. After seeing these photos I think new tires are going to be on my Christmas list.

i go no more than 4 yrs
Ones on my DD are about that age....still plenty of tread but know better from past experiences. Whats a few hundred in the grand scheme of things. We spend all kinds of money on paint interior engine then cheap out on tires, brakes? No way

Wow... that could have been really bad. Glad it's just a flat tire and no damage to you or the car.

Yes you did rightly replaceing the aged tires no matter how good they look..assuming you want to drive the car a bit..
Tires and rubber have come quite a ways in the last 30+ years also..
I put new BFG RWL 255 60's on my '78 as soon as I bought it home in July..

The tires on it looked OK as far as tread..but sidewalls were checked and I simply didn't trust them.
Car hadn't been driven much at all in over 5 years..

The very first thing I did on my 72. They had full tread but were date coded 1977 (thanks to the help from the forum) Looking at some of the damage in these pics posted I glad I did !

The tires have about 6/32nds but when I was going through the redceipts from the PO it seems they were bought 15 years ago .

Yep the right thing for older tires.
My new to me 78 had really nice tires on it with plenty of tread..
Car had been sitting for over 3 yrs and sidewalls were checked.
Put a new set of 255/60 RWL BFG tires on with 4 wheel alignment..

Tires are important..Jim

Holy cow...mine on my '70 are about 15 years old and have plenty of tread but after reading this thread I'm worried!! I only drive it to and from car shows but never the less I don't want to take the risk. Looks like I'll be buying myself a Christmas present!

A couple tire shops locally told me they won't touch a tire (even air) if its over 6 years old. One guy made it sound like a CA state law. Knowing CA law makers, it wouldn't surprise me...but its not true.

What is the date code on these tires? Been thinking about buying from them, but little worried about getting old tires.

My 69 had some tires that were approaching 20 years old. Garage kept so no sunlight issues. Pulled out into neighborhood and the belt separated and caused a huge bulge. Thankfully it didn't blow but it would have out on the highway. baby now has new radial T/A shoes. Will never go that long again.

You know I see alot of people storing cars with old tires on them using them to push around the shop. I wonder how many get a surprize? I got mine in the air and pulled the valve stems as soon as I could.

I run bias plys on my '69 because I don't want to worry about a radial blow-out on a fiberglass car plus they look much better.
