Default How old is too old for tires ???

So , whens is it time for new tires due to age and not wear ?

I just scored a set of 255-60-15 Cooper Cobras for $325 after rebates from Discount tire Direct . I bought them because the car I bought about 6 months ago has Goodyear Eagle GT 2's on it . The tires have about 6/32nds but when I was going through the redceipts from the PO it seems they were bought 15 years ago .

Did I do the right thing , is it time for new shoes ??? ...

I would replace them if it was my car. I replaced the tires on a 72 that I just purchased. The owner wanted my to take it out on the road, but I passed because the tires had cracks on the sidewalls.

I also replace my trailer tires every 6years.

15 year old tires? Yeah, they needed replaced no matter how good they looked.

I have a friend in Greenville OH Grilliott Alignment he has been in the alignment, tire repair replacement auto repair business all his life along with his father.
Ron says every 5 years regardless. I sold tires for a while after Viet Nam I agree.

I have an older friend that had an old tire blow on the front of his 1980. He said when he got the thing stopped the left front fender was junk. The repair cost more than a set of tires.

I am sure that a blown tire can do alot of damage to fiberglass . That was a bad day for him ...

I have some GoodYears in the shed that are at least 15 years old look good no cracking. I had a set of Firestone Indys 10 years old cracking pretty bad white letters started splitting I was gonna replace anyway before the splitting started less then 7K on the stones. I just thought I would share my observations with these two sets of tires

Wow! Excellent price. Congrats on that for sure. Glad you are replacing them - they are overdue.

I had a tire blow on a ford f250 at 60 on the highway. The flapping rubber ripped the plastic fender liner out, folded my rear quarter panel up, ripped out the metal supports, and crushed my exhaust pipe closed. And thats all thin steel!!!! I think I would cry if a blew a tire on the vette. It would destroy it.

Agreed - Problem with tires as they age is that the rubber gets hard (splitting aside). The irony is the hard rubber doesn't wear so it looks like the tire could go on forever. In the meantime you have way reduced traction (unsafe), and a ticking time bomb of the rubber letting go while you're driving....

It is my belief that car hobbyist is more aware of the tire age problem than the general public. Most DD drivers wear out the tires before age issues arise. I have seen many tire age issues on utility trailers, horse trailers and car haulers. Everyone advertises their trailers as having good thread but most are oblivious to cracks between these good threads and the age of the tire. The longest I will go on a tire is 10 years as long as there are no cracks or change in the ride.

Fifteen-year-old tires would be okay for low-speed, limited distance driving. Extended highway driving would put you and your car at risk. While I have seen folks opine on tire life -some as short as three years- the tire industry organization itself is very forthright in publishing the recommendations from the tire manufacturers themselves. They acknowledge there is no scientific data to support a drop dead span for tire life. This is due to the many variables affecting tire life. But they generally agree that 10 years is about the replace time. Here's a link to the recommendations so you can better understand what the manufacturers have to say on the issue: http://www.tireindustry.org/consumer-safety

It's extremely dangerous on any car... fiberglass cars like ours, even more so.

I replaced these last year. They were 18 years old, no cracks, hardly any miles but I was going on the road trip with it and was not going to gamble.
