If you remove the engine and trans you will save about 1000 pounds

You could always exchange the cast iron intake manifold, cylinder heads and water pump for aluminum.

Why?

Do you plan on drag racing or running rally sport with it?

no just a street cruiser

i can already feel the difference on the street with 100 lbs gone

i don't need to go crazy, asking for some not so obvious junk i can remove for free

i read about BJ's crazy stuff like front air canister 45lbs, which i don't have and the rear battering ram, which i intend to keep

I like the idea of lightening my Corvette, and I may take out the spare and jack (Platinum AAA, tows 200 miles), but wow, 1 lb for the driver visor, that is HARD CORE!

I used to backpack in the Colorado Rockies, carrying an 80 lb pack. We went so far as to cut the handles off of our toothbrushes to save 1/10th of an ounce.

If you have a moment, I am curious as to what the spare tire tub weighed-

Thank You-

-Ray

i bought the car without the driver visor and was not going to replace it and with so little room head or otherwise in the car, i figure the stupid passenger with the "vanity" mirror getup is just as insane to leave in there, and frankly it cleaned it up nicely, the lights didn't work it was a mess.

rear speakers foamed went away in the 90's that had to go.

when i get a chance I'll try to weight the tub, it feels light the jack which i weighed around 10lbs

Or start with a smaller car. I have hauled a couple hounded pounds of stuff in the trunk of my Chevelle and never noticed it was slower or could tell it was back there. I'm not sure what why anyone would care for a street driven car that is not going to compete

My wife weighs 107 lbs.
When she gets in the car, I feel NO difference whatsoever than when she gets out.
Think about it like that.....does the addition of a passenger SLOW you down? Then the removal of 100-200 LBS is NOT going to give you any felt difference unless you are making serious suspension mods.

Just my .02, not looking to offend, just looking at this realistically.

Well, you DO have somewhat of an advantage with that shop of yours. But in your case, you've built a pro-street car. The OP doesnt seem to have such extensive modifications. 400 LBS makes a difference...100 lbs isnt even noticeable.

So I see you bought a targa top? I was going to call you this summer about selling mine but I just couldnt part with it, even though I havnt used it since I bought those T-Tops from you.

Absolutely correct. A fairly reliable rule of thum for quarter mile times vs weight is that removing 100 lbs reduces ET by 1 tenth (of a second). That is over a full quarter mile. That can't be felt on the track and certainly not in a short run on the street.

A friend I met years ago here in Florida, moved to Nebraska, I think, and so he/I keep in touch.....his handle is 69427 Mike......and he is into competition with his car....and has shaved it down to the 2800 lbs region if I remember right......

want to try looking him up here, and if not, send me a PM, and I can give you his contact info......

he is a retired GM engineer.....I used to kid him about filling the frame with helium would make it weigh less.......

Interesting point. Lets say you fill the entire car with helium. It will "weigh" less but the mass will be the same, so there would be no effect on acceleration. Acceleration = force/mass, not weight. I'm sure your engineer buddy pointed that out.

Go to some aluminum parts:

Radiator, water pump, heads.

Also lightweight wheels will really help. The reciprocating weight reduction does more then the usual 100lbs = .1. I've tested this on both of my cars.

Just light weight skinnies on the front alone is 1 tenth reduction and 2 mph gain on my 71. It's a reduction of about 45lbs.. I've tested this at the track, same day, A-B-A test style.

On my 02, my drag wheels knock off 70lbs of spinning weight, I definitely can feel the difference on the street during hard pulls.

That aint my shop I may cut out the front cross member after I do the 4 link which will eliminate the rear cross member , and use chrome moly tubing in there place should save 100 or more pounds and strengthen the chassis

How ya been any word on your car getting done ? I know of a mint 1980 frame in webster
