Default Fuel gauge smoking

I´m mounting my Corvette c3 1972 together with a brand new harness.
Everything works fine but the fuel gauge start to smoke a little after a while.
It comes from the resitor in the back of the gauge, it does not smell electrical burning, more like old dust.( car has been standing for 12 years)
The gauge work fine and there are no other issues.
You can hold your fingers against the resistor a while so it´s not burning hot.
Anyone know if the resistor is suppost to become varm?
Any ideas?
Regards Robban

I don't understand. How could the resistor be smoking if it's only lukewarm?

I have a 71 Camaro that just did the same thing.. Gauge is working but it smokes a little. Does not smell like you'd expect (not bad). What did you resolve with yours? Mine was sitting for 38 years. I suspect is OK?
thanks Roy

A resistor will always have current so can get warm. It should never smoke. Suspicious if the resistor is warm to touch that is not where the smoke is coming from. Probably looks like it but either the gauge or the wire is hot?
