Default Restore PO2 covers

Hello,

I recently got a second set of PO2 and would appreciate some help and tips what is the best way to bring them back to live

I searched already in the C3 section and only found already finished covers, maybe I missed one so if someone can post the link to a PO2 restaurationthread ?

Here the current situation

Interesting difference between the original caps and the new ones. Looks like someone makes a mistake during assembly

Not really. There were two style caps for these. The P02 style differs from the P01. If memory serves, the reproduction caps are P02 style.

Meanwhile I contacted Trimparts and they told me these caps were wrongly assembled 15 years ago

But what a great service of them they send me 4 new ones without any cost for me

In future I will get more parts of them. as I never had such a service before.
Here a pic of the new correctly assembled caps

Thanks Terri from Trimparts

New Question

Is it possible to take apart the outer polished ring and the inner ring ? Looks they are hold together with somekind of rivets

I don't think you want to do any further disassembly. Not sure how you would get them re-assembled. Clean and polish pieces. Repaint black areas with semi-flat black or satin black paint. I like John Deere 'Blitz' black for trim paint.

Interesting timing for this thread.
I also just picked up a second set of P02 hubcaps and am interested in cleaning them up.

The way I see it is experiment with the lesser hubcaps, perfect the process and redo the nicer caps.

I'd love to see photos of your progress. Should you repaint the black, I'd like to know what you used and how well it worked for you.

Sounds like in previous posts that the black is a satin black vs a gloss. Good info as I will start soon.

Thanks
Scott

Almost anything on a C3 that has 'blackout' or 'trim' black paint on it has semi-flat black paint (almost identical to 'satin' black paint). Different makers call it satin or semi-flat.

Interior black trim, exterior black trim, wheelwell and underhood blackout paint are all that type of black paint. Underhood "components" that are painted black [brackets, accessories, air cleaner, etc] are semi-gloss black. There are differences of opinion on the sheen of black paint on the frame; but semi-gloss black is as shiny as you want on a 'rough' frame.

Currently I am far away from painting I gave the caps to a friend who is experienced in metalwork and try now his best to remove the dings and scratches

Meanwhile the centerpiece is disassembled

Does someone know what kind of rivet is used ?

Thanks

Default That is a

That is a spin rivet. It was a little metal post formed in the trim piece that looked like a rivet. Then they simply pushed a forming tool over it or the pushed a forming tool over it while it spun (spin rivet). You could re-make a fake rivet and glue it in there or thread it and put little screws in there. Just a suggestion.

I'm interested to see what technique you use to repaint the black on that large rim. Do you plan to mask off each chrome spoke and spray? or to hand brush between every chrome spoke?

Long time ago I started this thread , meanwhile I give up to restore the old rings , because its more or less impossible to get the dings out .

I polished the 4 best rings I had and install the new caps

Next winter I will fresh up the black parts when I get an idea how to do it

Looking very nice! I polished mine and touched up some paint areas. Waiting for new plastic flag emblems from a vendor (on back order). Hope to have them for the summer. In the meantime, using the trim rings and center caps.
Enjoy the ride
