Default Blown 1980 350 engine.

I blew the engine on my 1980 350 automatic Corvette. I don't know much about these things I need to know where and what I'm looking for I will need to get a carburetor also. I want to keep it as original as possible I'm confused as to what horsepower it should have and what gives it the horsepower? the carburetor or engine specs??

Since you admit not knowing much about small block Chevrolet engines, how do you know you blew your engine? Is your car drivable?

Go find a mechanic that can help you.

It depends on which motor you have. There were three different motors offered in 1980. Two were 350 cid and one was 305 cid, but the 305 was only sold in CA. Look at this web site to see if the information is helpful.
I would also suggest you have a qualified mechanic take a look at it for you before you throw a lot of money at it.

[QUOTE=alexandersuero;1591560269]I blew the engine on my 1980 350 automatic Corvette. I drove it to a mechanic that said the heads were messed up something about the shaft and the carb was not good. My brother drove it when it overheated n i guess that did it. The mechanic quote was about $700 less than a new engine. i dont want to pour $$ into an engine that i dont know what its been thru.( I just got the car about 3months ago n drove it once before this). I've done the calipers and brakes, checked trans, rear axles. I figured if i put a new engine it should be in good shape. Any advice??

Not sure what's wrong with your engine; can you start it up, video and post what sounds you are hearing? I have a 78 L48 and changed the cam, heads, intake and carb. Did not factor in 38 year old crankshaft and bearings. After my second outing, spun a bearing and had to replace the motor. Here is a video (googled from u-tube) of what a spun bearing sounds like:

If you did spin a bearing (is that what your mechanic means by shaft=crankshaft?), your choice is either rebuild or replace the engine. I'd talk to your mechanic, have him list the problems and what needs to be done. I'd then post to this site, lots of experienced mechanics on this site can give you advice.

perhaps you should get a written description of what is wrong with the engine and post it here including what tests if any the mechanic performed to determine the damage to the engine.

You may be right, but why spend money you may not have to spend? Melwff offers good advice. It's worth your while to determine exactly what your problem might be before you throw money at it.
