Can't Get Shifter into Reverse

Having problems again after replacing the cable. The car goes into reverse easily without the cable attached but can't remove the key.
Hook the cable up and pull it manually and it works.
The problem seems to be that the spot where the cable attaches to the reverse level is lower than the placement of the cable sheath. When you try to shift it with the cable attached--the cable doubles up and bends. Either movement can be done separately reverse without the cable attached or move the cable but can't do it with the cable attached. Reverse moves easily and the steering lockout can be moved easily when not attached to cable but not both together???? It''s a new aftermarket cable. Could the length be off, or the holes in the cable. Is there an adjustment on the position of the cable up and down?? This is crazy.
Thanks and hope this makes sense.

Alan:
Does the cable go straight into the sheath?? No upward angle? Is the automatic one the same as the 4 speed--could the have sent me the wrong cable? There doesn't seem to be an adjustment. I have installed exactly like yours but as I said the attachment position on the reverse level is slightly lower than where the cable it mounted. Any pictures where the cable isn;t all the way in on the trans end? As always--thank you for all our help, pictures, and knowledge.

Hi Paul,
Looking at the photos you sent it appears the cable itself has 'kink' in it near the cable terminals. I would expect it to come out of the sheath straight.
The end of the cable with the rubber seal is installed at the transmission.
The cable for a car with atomic transmission is shorter in length.
How to straighten stranded cable 'kink'????
Regards,
Alan

The cable was not kinked until after it was installed and I tried to shift into reverse. I don't think you can straighten the cable--once it kinks it has probably created a weak spot and it will occur again. Just my opinion.

Solved the problem. All I had to do was straighten the cable; then loosen the 2 bolts under the dash that hold the plate where the steering end of the reverse lockout cable attaches and adjust it downward to basically shorten the cable and then re-tighten the bolts. Now everything works great--reverse and steering column lock both work.
