Assessing the Car: This step is critical and it’s often skipped. Before you do anything you need to learn about the car. Is the car just dirty or has it been damaged at some point? Have any modification taken place over the years? What sorts of documentation exists for this car?
At the end of this assessment you should be able to develop a plan. You should also make a judgment as to who is the best person to carry out this plan. Is this something that you can do, or should you bring in a professional. If you bring in a professional who might that be?

Preservation: This is the practice of maintaining a car by providing a stable environment in order to prevent further damage or deterioration. The car you found in a shed, or barn, is not a good example of preservation. Several decades of rain and snow, not to mention wild temperature fluctuations, have not preserved this car.

Dave Burroughs of BG fame is the world's leading expert on preservation. Then we have Miles Collier and Fred Simeone.

None of this is easy and a lot of judgements have to made along the way. The best advice is to not do anything for a while. Think about it and listen to everyone's opinion. Even if they're crazy.

Is Your Car Really Original?
That, sir, is some of the best advice you could give ANYONE in a situation like this. A bit of patience and just listening to the discussion at hand (and of the heart) never hurt a soul.

Later,

Lee

P.S. Of course your opinion is spot-on as you have a C4 as your avatar. Birds of a feather, my good man LOL!

Need help finding a replacement tail light for the trailer. It was the only casualty when coming out of hibernation. Need the amber one. I've found one on eBay but unsure of the size. Need 2 1/2" dia at the base.

Thank you!

I don't think Fred Simeone touched his Daytona Coupe for the first year he owned it. I know he brought it down here to the Revs Institute and had a number of people fly in to make suggestions as to how to best approach the car.

In the end the car went through one of the most extensive preservation exercises ever. It actually would have been cheaper to restore the car. All of the rubber lines were replaced with the originals bagged and labeled.

The car was disassembled and a lot of cleaning took place with brushes and citrus cleaner. They were extremely careful to not disturb the original finish. Today the car is drivable and he loves driving it.

Fred taught me that you never ever rush into these things. You simply talk to a lot of people and get different ideas. After a period of time you will develop your own plan.

WOW! That is a high dollar car. Totally different league of car I guess. I have only removed a few mouse skeletons from the drivers seat and added a couple boxes of baking soda to freshen up the interior. 3 tires are holding air, one of the slicks has a bad valve that I need to have replaced. Checked the Oil and it looks brand new.
I'm amazed more and more every time I look at it.

Question, only knowing the little info I have so far. What do you think this car would equate to on the Ford side or the Dodge... Side? Again I'm much more familiar with the Ford side of things.

Not wanting to stir the brand feud just fun discussion for those that have more knowledge of the different brands.

I'm a young whipper snapper, but I would guess the ZL-1 block and heads would be comparable to Hemi or SOHC motors in drag racing. Ultimately it comes down to setup of chassis and engine component choices.

In the northeast there is the Factory Appearing Stock Tire series that would be comparable to the day I would imagine. There are videos on YouTube but they aren't running sticky tires or wider tires.

Actually it all comes down to provenance. The car with the best provenance is worth the most money. Speed is just totally irrelevant.

Just start assembling notebooks and images.

A new pic! Check out the zebras! Anyone have an idea as to what track this is? Tried to find Bob Martin, he has passed away and his son took over the business. But it looks like he has passed also.

Thanks for continuing to share photos and information. I really love vintage race cars. I need to check the Nascar museum page to see if a car I knew and touched personally is in there finally. My dad and his friend took it back to NC to a restorer to go in the museum a few years back.

As for you car, I think the best suggestion made so far is to listen to lots of ideas and then make your own plan. It's your car, enjoy it.

My plan would be to get it running as soon as possible as it sits while doing as little as possible to cosmetics. And then I'd take it to the track and put a hurtin' on some new Mickey Thompsons.

Interesting that the seats have headrests. Perhaps 68 or 69's? I guess they were replaced to accommodate the shoulder straps coming over the top of them. The 70 and later seat backs wouldn't work.

Depending on the degree of factory involvement, it would be akin to the non-original Boss 429 cars described in this racing program:

http://www.mustangandfords.com/featu...-429-drag-car/

Valuable engines in ordinary bodies. There's no question about the value of this car being restored back to factory, as it was likely not a factory L-88 car rebodied to look like a 1971.

It's got a great look, and is an important testament to an era of racing and to your friend's accomplishments (sorry for your loss).
