Default Product/method to clean blackened chrome exhaust tips?

I recently discovered that my exhaust tips on my '72 are supposed to be chrome. Inspected them closer and scratched off a little of the black crud that now covers them. Figured I'd try a little degreaser. Worked ok. Took a lot of scrubbing and still didn't get it all off. Here's what the right side looks like after 1/2 an hour with some degreaser and a lot of scrubbing. My question is; is there an easier way to do this? A better product? Getting up on top is a chore due to the small gap between the body and the top of the exhaust tip.

About 60% done.

Still need to do the other side.

Take them off and soak them in a bucket of gas or brake fluid or Evaporust (your choice). It'll be an experiment as to what cuts through what ever is on there the best. Let them soak for 24hrs or so, then they should clean up easier, after that some chrome polish.

I don't know what came on the car from the factory ( chrome or stainless ) but my 72 has stainless exhaust tips on it and there is very little maintenance with the stainless . They look great all of the time. You might just want to look for a stainless set.

Believe it or not, "Soft Scrub" (in the dish liquid section of the store). It actually acts as a very light rubbing compound, and leaves a no scratch smooth surface.

I've used 'Scratch Out' on my trans am's dual tips and it worked great. Its a rubbing compound you can get from O'Riley's, Auto Zone, etc.

I use liquid Bar Keeper's Friend on stainless steel tips. Works great.
