Default SBC 409 in 1978 Vette?

Howdy guys,

I'm debating either turning my l82 into a 383 stroker, which would take me right around $2500, but then I found this on craigslist..

http://collegestation.craigslist.org...622380533.html

I have my own distributor and don't know why he's asking that difference anyways., but does this look like a good deal? What kinds of things do I need to ask him?

Thanks everyone

My thought would be to stick with your 383 and build it to your specs for the same cost. Even though they listed what is in the motor. You really don't know and if it's not what you wanted, it will cost you more to pull and return it.

409? Is that an overbore on a 400 sbc? If so it is externally balanced requiring a different flywheel and balancer. UGH.

Encsdoug, I should have specified the asking price of his 409 is $1500, so my 383 would be $1,000 more assuming his will last a while and everything, still same advice? I'm a college kid and not really rolling in the money, but my long block builder gives a 1 year unlimited mile warranty which is really nice, and I would just split the payments over a while I guess.

Dochorsepower, yes the 409 is an overbored 400. Since the 383 would be an overbored 350, does it not also need different flywheel and balancer? And would it not be externally balanced? This would be my first rebuild.

Sorry about the "guys" Easy Mike, that's just my generalization for a group of people, I'll fix it in future posts!

I would stick to the most common and popular 383 stroker motor.

Well I would definitely pass on the $1000 distributor....
