Default Larger spare tire---will it fit?

Because it was a three day weekend I decided to do a couple fo things on my car.

I dropped the spare tire carrier for what appeared to be the first time-ever. The tire was flat and I tried- to no avail- to inflate it. I was time to get a spare.

I went down to NTB to find a cheap tire replacement. The original size was 195/80/15 and had "TEMPORARY TIRE" on it. The guys at NTB could not find (or order) anything like that. What they came up with was a 235/75/15.

Now, the 235 is obviously larger/wider than the original. Will that cause any issues when I put it back int he carrier-- will it fit okay??

Thanks!

A 235-75-15 may not fit in the tub.

Thanks for the reply...

So... Why would the 75 vs the 80 cause a problem? Unless I am misreading, the 75 has a smaller aspect ratio and is "smaller"

My concern was going from 195 to 235 as the tire just got a whole lot thicker?

As for tire thickness or cross section, I've had a 255/60/15 spare in my tub by adjusting the two hanger bolts down as much as possible.

If you want to replace the one you took out buy a 205/75/15. I assume you will mount it on the space saver spare rim?

The 235 will probably fit but you might need to loosen the locking mechanism a few turns. More of the spare will be seen but hopefully not badly. Bought my 205 on amazon for $65.

This is my new spare:

I did not want this look:

Thanks- I'm not so worried about it hanging a bit lower, but then again I have not seen it yet! HA!

When I had the original compact spare replaced, the tire store manager told me the 205/75/15 was the closest in ride height to the 255/60/15. That said, your 235 tire will be taller. Not sure if that would damage the rear differential if installed opposite a 255/60/15. If possible, you may want to exchange the 235 for a 205 so the car will ride level with the spare installed. It also fits in the carrier without loosening the bolts.

Would not the carrier be designed to handle the stock wheel 255/60/15? My thought is that once you swap the spare, you've got to put the regular wheel back in the carrier?

My gut tells me that the difference between a 60 and a 75 would not create a problem on the drive to a tire repair place. The factory spare was a 80.

The bolt at the rear of the tire carrier has to be adjusted all the way down for the 255/60/15 to fit. The design was meant to temporarily carry the tire for repair.

Well, I tried to fit the 235/75/15 but.... NOT. Simply too big.

I took the tire back (spoke with a different manager) and came home with a 185/65/15 which was in stock. Apparently he had better visibility into the stores stock.

Perfect fit, the carrier snugged right up to the top with zero tire showing.

I understand it fits but....
When looking you want something close to the 195/80/15 because in the rear you want close to rotation on both sides. Sounds like the manager was trying to find a tire that would fit in the tub & not worry about tire height.

For instance, according to the charts:

195/80/15 tire height 27.28 revs/mile 740 circum 85.7

255/60/15 tire height 27.05 revs/mile 746 circum 84.9

205/75/15 tire height 27.11 revs/mile 744 circum 85.1

185/65/15 tire height 24.5 revs/mile 825 circum 76.8

Therefore the reason the 205 is suggested.

There is a big difference with your tire.
