77 motor color
Hi gang, Does anyone know of some pretty reliable data on about what VIN # the switch took place in the engine color? My 77 is #942 and when I purchased it 15 yrs ago the engine was orange. I'm getting ready to pull the motor to do some work and when finished paint it. Any thoughts? I don't have an NCRS manual to check.

This is a quote from my restoration book by Richard Prince. " Between the last week of August and the first week of September 1976 , GM's Flint V-8 Engine Plant started painting Corvette engines Corporate Blue instead of Chevrolet Orange".
Hope this helps.

sounds like your choice, most Die hard Chevy Enthusiasts expect to see Chevrolet Orange !
me personally I would only paint it Chevrolet Orange, regardless what year the vehicle is.
However I noticed your car is Blue, so that might work for you !

So. to answer OP`s question a little further.... I thought the engine was built in another plant, then sent to the assembly facility. The engine would be what... a month or more ahead of the actual car`s assembly date, right? So an engine painted blue on the first day of the change, would not be installed into a car assembled on the same day, but rather a month or more later.... is this correct?

My intended question was how long (on average) it actually took from engine plant to vehicle assembly? So an engine painted on the first day of the color change would be installed in a car built how many days later?
OP was asking if his car`s engine was orange, or blue.... wouldn`t that depend on when his engine got to the assembly plant and into the car, NOT on when the paint change was done?
So if they changed colors the last week of August.... cars built for the next few weeks were still getting orange engines, right?

If you really wanted to be sure, check the date code at the back of the engine block. I think the NCRS allows for up to three months between engine manufacture and car build date iirc. That would have to be an unusual set of circumstances though.
