The term muscle car has evolved into anything with a high hp V8 lately. In it's purest form a muscle car is an intermediate such as a Chevelle, GTO, Road Runner, etc. Pony cars are Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers, etc. That leaves the Corvette in a sports car category which is what it is. That's what it started out as and that's how it will go out. My $.02.

Corvette a fast moving British war ship from WWII. As a car it's a sports car.

Hi,
For me in the 60s there were:
Muscle Cars, (396 Chevelle SS),
Pony Cars, (Z-28 Camaro),
Sports Cars, (Corvette),
Grocery Getters, (427 Impala).
There were certainly more than just one example in each of the categories, EXCEPT for the Corvette! That's what made the Corvette special to some people.
Regards,
Alan

A muscle car from the factory handled poorly and had lousy brakes. The Corvette has muscle, but it's still first and foremost a sports car.

Labels again?

For me if I look at "muscle" in terms of HP a Corvette is a sports car and some have a heck of a lot of muscle... if I look at "muscle" like on a human then a corvette is all sports car and not all bulky with trouble moving around....

As irony would have it back 30 plus years ago at the cruise spot I would hang at the cats with what most people call "muscle" cars would boast and brag how bad *** they were until a corvette would drive through and they would back right down, the corvettes had a reputation real or imagined as being mean.

I'm not very interested in labels... But a stock c1-c3 corvette doesn't approach the British and Italian sports cars of the era in terms of handling/balance/feedback that to me are the defining features of a sports car. But they have a lot more muscle. On the other side of the coin, they are much more capable and refined in terms of handling/braking etc than the 'muscle cars' of the era. So to me they fit somewhere in the middle, and I could care less who wants to put them in one category or the other.

All that muscle allowed Corvettes to compete and win against the worlds best. The Owens Corning Corvettes won 22 straight and Corvette Racing just won their 100th. That's not a bad resume for what is now considered a world class sports car.

When I think of a muscle car, I think of something heavier. A Corvette is lightweight and fast, more like a race car.

A sports car has 2 seats only, a muscle car has a back seat for whatever

The Corvette is an American sports car. Name another American car of the 60's and 70's with factory 4 wheel disc brakes, independant front and rear suspension, light weight, and powerful engine.
Muscle cars started out as family sedans and coupes. Factory engineers put some excitement into these low budget, bare bones grocery getters with big powerful engines.
I recall riding in many of these behemoths of the era. Straight line fast? Yes absolutely! Nimble and sporty? Sadly no.
So lets classify the Corvette as a true American sports car.

Corvettes are sports cars ar home racing in the quarter mile or rally racing. They can do everything well with little modifcation.

The 60's cars are muscle cars, just straight line fast, great quarter milers or cruisers. Having a few different models over the years. In my opinion, they cant handle the turns that a corvette can at the same speed.

The Mercury would be classified as a land yacht by today's standard. Book 'em Danno!
