New everything? Pistons? Which pistons? New rods? Which rods? New crank? Which? Why do you need all new if it ran good before? 5K is more than you need to spend, if the pistons still fit the bores.

New Comp cam rods (came in the comp cam kit), one of the pistons were busted, new pistons. The guy suggested updating all while it was apart, said the motor was very "tired" and needed it.

New pistons add, probably, over $800 to the job. It would be good to have a detailed list of what will be done. New pistons, maybe things will require a balance job. All this should be detailed, specifically.

When I shopped around for a machine shop, I had general conversations about what each shop said needed to be done. When I chose one, we had a detailed discussion about what, exactly, would be done, and it was all detailed, on the job order/invoice. One hiccup was that the oil pump (A Melling) which I supplied, would not fit within the pan. That was a most unexpected surprise.

It's hard to provide advice, with so many unknowns.

By Comp Cams "rods" I assume you mean pushrods, $100. Comp roller cam/ lifters $500, and a set of forged pistons can be had for under $400. Of course, you can spend more, if you like to throw away money. As Ed mentioned, get a detailed rundown, IN WRITING of what they plan to do and let us look it over for you. Not to sound condescending, but you did admit to being a newbie, and skeptical they may be taking advantage of a "naive chick", I have a feeling that is EXACTLY what could be happening. Although I do realize it is easy to spend $5000 on a rebuild, that just may not be necessary in your case.

Just a few of this weekends completed projects.

Hoping this small defect in the PS pulley will not affect function. (?)

Used POR 15 manifold paint on the water pump, back of the PS pump and several other parts. Looks like clean cast iron, hope it lasts.

I have to admit, I'm shocked you knew the drumstick was my favorite John!! Have not done much. Been sick as a dog, mostly ordered spark plugs, air filters, hoses, and other items for the engine install. Engine is done and we are picking it up Monday. Mostly just shopping online for parts. We are putting replacement brake booster and master cylinder in (keep the original or turn it in for core?) REALLY hoping my BB girl is back together and purring come spring!

Lucky guess on my part with the drumstick reference!
I kept my master cylinder. In hindsight I should of just put a new seal kit in it. The replacement from the local parts jobber is a real cheap casting. It works fine but the older I get (60) the more picky I have become.
Great that the motor is ready.

The last 3 days have been spent working non stop cleaning 50 years of built up grime, rust oil and dirt from all suspension parts. I have used the left over Cast high temp POR product for the cast iron parts and cleaned the A-frames down to the bare metal with a wire bit on drill and painted with Semi gloss Krylon. Can I expect durability or will this be a very temporary "pretty" that will wear of quickly? Powder coating is preferred but this was more cost appropriate at this time. Pictures to come. Engine, Tranny and insulation on tunnel and foot wells in place!! I cannot wait to hear her start up the first time!!!!

JR,

The Krylon that I used (covermax) has a built in primer. I would be thrilled to get 10 years!!! Thanks!!

Hi c1n,
Parts going ON is always GOOD!
Regards,
Alan

Are the springs 'oriented in the pockets correctly? Ends at the 'observation' holes?
Sometimes if the spring is turned a bit from where it should be it can be part of a ride height 'situation' later on when the car's back on the ground.

I thought those were actual pictures from St. Louis back in 1969. Nice work!

That is a great question. I'm not reinstalling the parts, so I am not sure.

I just noticed the motor's back in! You'll have it running by Christmas!!!

PS the C3vr.com internet club is booking rooms for our June 7-11 Gathering in Branson, MO. You'll never be closer to C3 believers.
