What is the best way to store the hood? Do I lay it down or stand it up?

Your choice. Takes up more room laid down.

I just laid mine on its side with a piece of carpet or towel. Didn't want to damage the front or rear points/edges. It doesn't weigh much.

Why not set it back in place?

I taped the edges then wrapped it in a blanket and put it in the shed where no one can get to it.

I put some blankets and cushions on the roof of the Vette and placed it there... Easy, convenient. Probably wouldn't have gone that way if I had a really nice paint job though.

Lay it down under the bed, when the wife is not looking of course!

It doesn't matter how you store it, but it takes up less room if you stand it up. BUT...put padding under it so it will not be supported just by the nose. I think you might be better laying it on a side so the load can be spread; and probably with the underside facing out (less chance of damage to the paint). LOTS of protective padding, for sure.

I laid mine down on the bed in one of the spare bedrooms.

I put a couple of lag bolts in the wall studs at an angle so that it slides toward the wall, and hung the door by the hood latches on them.
Drape a blanket over it if it's in an area that sees traffic.
Wire the latches to the bolts if it's a wall that a door is on so it is not jarred loose by the door closing repeatedly.

Inscribing guidance lines around the hinge will ease reinstallation of the hood.
