Does somebody live near of sewell ?
Hello,
As I said in my presentation, I'm looking for a 1980 or 1981 corvette, black, with a manual transmission.
I have find one at Sewell (near Philadelphia), but many things seem strange.
The current owner own this corvette since 2001 and would have made only 65 miles in 15 years.
The previous owner have owned this car 5 years and only 418 miles on odometer. I have got those information by CARFAX and AUTOCHECK.
It's difficult to beleive this car have made less of 500 miles in 20 years, and runs great, as say the mechanic.
An other thing, the windshield is cracked on the top at the driver side, perhaps a sign of rusted birdcage.
I envisage to go to see this car myself, the airplane tickets are really cheap at this time.
I would like to know if one of you live near this mechanic (signature automotive at Sewell) to have a look on this corvette before me to know if I can go. Because it's the only car I have found at this moment (at a low price). And do this travel for one car it's dicey.
The price of this car is 7000 $. The interior is tired.
I hope my english is good enough to understand me !
Thanks at every one.

Are you talking about Sewell, New Jersey?
The mechanic should be able to send you some pictures considering you are willing to travel some distance.
You can post to here and we can advise if worth the trip or not.
Where would you be coming from?
Also, I would think in this economy for an '81 era car you should be able to get a fairly nice one for 7-10 grand locally. They made like 50,000 of them.
I say this before you commit to all this travel expenses to look at a tired car.
Your going to have 10 grand into it in no time so buy the best one you can find and afford.

Thanks to you !
It's really easier for me to write than speak !
I have got time to think before, not when I speak.
Sometime, I have got lot of difficulty to understand what you can write. Often when it's technical terms.
Thanks.

Hello Marshal135,
Yes, it's near Philadelphia.
The mechanic have send me some pics.
But it's not easy to have a real idea of the state of the car on it.
Sorry, but I'm not understand all that you want to tell me !
You tell me I could be find a better car between 7 and 10000 $ in your country ? That's right ? Cars with he manual speed are a little bit more expensive.
I live in France, and it's difficult to find here a '80 or '81 Corvette, black, with manual speed. And they are really more expensive.
Currently the airplane tickets only cost 370 euros, less than 400 $, it's really cheap.
I'm try to join some pics.
Thanks.

You might want to sen a PM (Private Message) to Gordon Mudge, he lives quite close by and knows these cars very well. I would certainly trust his opinion on the condition and value of this car.

While it may seem strange that the car would see so few miles in 20 years, it really isn't that hard to imagine. Unfortunately, very often when this is the case, the car has sat outside in the weather much of that time and that isn't good. If the car has been stored inside for the 20 years, that is certainly a good thing.
The climate around Sewell, New Jersey is quite temperate. A normal amount of rain, snow and hot and humid in the summer. Lots of humidity! None of which is good for a car that has been stored outside. Again these are things that Gordon will be very familiar with and can assess for you.
Good luck... GUSTO

Hello GUSTO14,
I have sent a private message to Gordon.
As say the mechanic, this car has been stored in a garage almost all the time the current owner has this car, in fact 15 years.
Thanks a lot.

Not much I can add but that's not a 418 mile car for sure.
Sewell, New Jersey is correct. It's very close to Philadelphia.
Doesn't look too bad for $7000 if it's mechanically sound.

I don't believe you have said, is this a 1980 or is it a 1981?
The 1980 is the last of these cars without any computer controls. The 1981 has computer control of the carburetor and the ignition. The computer control is not a big problem, but the non-computer controlled car might be preferable for you in France. Just another point for you to consider.
Good luck, and welcome to the Corvette Forum... GUSTO
