Anybody using an ididit steering column in a 68?

Bandit, I would highly recommend putting the stock power steering on your convertible. The manual steering is not worth it, dangerous on the freeway and highly over rated. I changed my coupe after the first year of fighting the steering wheel, forty-four years ago. Lou.

I agree a big block convertible would be a better driving car with power steering. I won't be making that change due to the fact the car did not come with power steering, I have the tank sticker. That's the reason I have started the new project (68 t-top), with it I will not be limited to following correct parts and numbers. I'm going to make it a comfortable cruiser.

I have a Tilt "ididit" in my '34 street truck nonpower with a 15" s. Wheel.....glad I got the tilt! It's a great no frills column and simple to install.....just be sure you order the correct length if you buy the Chevy Generic column.

My plan is to purchase a direct fit column made just for the 68. I not sure which manufacture I will go with ididit or Flaming River.

(The tilt option is very useful....either vendor's column will be an improvement)

I went to the flea market yesterday in Lakeland and a gentleman with a huge selection of parts who has a shop told me the Ididit for the 68 is not a simple plug n play it required a bit of work on the wiring. Can anyone speak to this? Thanks Phil

I would like to see an actual picture of the ididit and Flaming River mounting bracket that mounts to the dash area. The catalog picture of the ididit shows what looks like a just straight plate while the catalog picture of the Flaming River looks very similar to the original column mounting bracket. Any help would be appreciated.

We just installed the tilt IDIDIT column in a 68. If you are heavy you want to get the tilt only column because the tilt tele column will push the wheel back 2.5" toward the driver. In our case, our customer was a rather larger gentleman that needed more clearance so we went with the tilt only that pulls the wheel back 1.5" vs the tilt tele that pushes it back but tele's...
We also ran used the leather/wood smaller steering wheel and if you get their column you'll also need to get the upper hub... if you wish to run a stock style wheel.
The installation was flawless but we did have to do away with the upper (68 only) and lower column covers. The Ididit column matched up nicely with the original dash pad. I've got some pictures of this but I've not published them yet. If I get some free time this weekend I'll post them up for you.
The only thing that I found to be an issue was that we painted the column to match the original color and to do this professionally we removed the upper column components. To re-assemble we had to make a different style compression tool since the Ididit was smaller than the OEM style too. You don't have to do this and taping off the upper column parts would probably be easier for you.

In changing the column a few things come into play... quality and price! Both of which I'm very satisfied with from Ididit. Buying an original 69-75 tilt column is very pricey and so is the alternate choice.
My post isn't a plug for Ididit, all i can state is my personal experience and my customer satisfaction of which both seem to be outstanding.

Direct plug and play..
Like I posted above, the tilt tele is a bit deceiving due to the fact that it push's the column outward toward the driver. The tilt only pulls the column inward which is what our customer was after. Combined with the smaller wheel we achieved more room for our customer which is what he was after.
This install went flawlessly.... and the mating to the dash pad (less the upper and lower covers) was awesome. It really was a sweet deal for our customer and aside from the levers actually looks factory.

I've never had a reason to install one to be honest.. the cost difference was the deciding factor and if you combine this with the quality of the Ididit you'll be very satisfied.

On the ididit column can you tell me what is the distance between the centerline of the holes in the mounting bracket and the surface where the steering wheel mounts on. I'm trying to compare the distance between the ididit and the stock column as well as the stock telescoping column.
Thanks

Any pictures of the install? Removing the 68 only covers maybe a game changer for me.

you would be better contacting willcox directly. they have no way of knowing from the first (4 year old) post that they are the people you are trying to contact.
