Fuel pump push rod access

Fuel pump push rod access
I'm trying to zero in on an oil leak and I'm a bit confused. There are two threaded holes adjacent to the fuel pump which I believe on SBC can provide assistance if you run a bolt in the top one to hold the rod in place while installing the pump. Now, on BBC, should there be a bolt in the top hole??? I don't recall ever seeing one there ever since I've owned the car, but, the engine was rebuilt about a year or so ago, right around the time I noticed the leak.

Hi 74,
The Chassis Service Manual suggests that using the plug isn't always necessary.
Putting a coating of heavy grease on the pump rod makes it 'stcky' enough so that it will stay in place after being inserted while you install the pump.
I use this method.

Alan

I guess what I'm really asking is, should there be a plug there when the engine is running? If the plug is missing, would oil come from the opening?
