Default Wheel and tire size help ...

I've asked a lot of folks questions about the size of their wheels and tires as I consider what I'm going to do on my 71 convertible. Someone suggested going to the website of "Wheelsforless". I went there, entered in my question about sizes and within 12 hours received an answer back telling me that my plans for the rear were good but they recommended a slightly different size for the front. And they told me why they made that recommendation.

So Thanks to the person who told me to go there and a big Thanks to Wheelsforless.

Hopefully I'm not breaking any Forum rules by complimenting a vendor.

No, its perfectly OK to compliment a vendor. They pay to advertise so feedback is welcomed.
Now, what size wheel/tire combo did they recommend?

If you have different size front/rear tires, you may have problems if you need to run your spare.

Default Wheel and Tire size

I just purchased a 71 small block convertible with the standard rally wheels and 70 series whitewalls that are over 31 years old. I'm thinking I'll go 17" and a bit wider tires but don't want to make any changes to the car. I asked Wheelsforless if I could go 17 x 8 with a 4.07 inch backspacing (available on various Torq Thrusts) and then 255 50 17 tires on the back and 225 45 17 tires on the front. They said that was a great choice but recommended going with 225 50 17s in the front because 45s were probably too low unless I had lowered the car. That also "fixes" the issue of I ever get a flat because the spare will work for both. I was thinking 17 x 8 with a 4 1/2 backspacing but that's not a sure thing.

Having the tire tuck in 1/2" over stock just doesn't look right to me. A 4.07 inch backspace would be better.

And for some reason the ones with 4.07 backspacing seem to cost more !!
