Palmyra Motors Back in the day [THREADS MERGED]
Some of you bought Corvettes from Palmyra Motors in the 60s or 70s. In the mid 70s, Howard sold about 300 Corvettes a year and had @100 in stock at any time. We bought a used 1960 and Howard actually sold us the car about an hour after he arrived in a Rolls, back from his weekends in NYC. Our present 1977 Corvette was purchased from Palmyra Motors. Attached is a 1975 newspaper article about Howard VanBortel, who was the father of Kitty VanBortel who owns VanBortel Corvettes.

My late father was the regional representative for the Toledo Scale Company, back in the late 50s-mid 70s. Palmyra, NY was within his sales territory, and when school was out, and I was young, I used to "ride shotgun" with him once in a while. I remember both going past, and going into, the "Corvette Store" that was located next to the main dealership building. It was formerly an IGA grocery store, possibly Breen's. When they closed the store, Howard bought the building, and moved the Corvette operation there.
In the fall of 1971, when my father was making a sales call in the Palmyra area, as he was driving past the dealership, a 1972 Vega GT caught his eye. For some unknown reason, he stopped to look at it, and wound up making a deal on it. Cute car, but the worst car he ever owned.
On a side note, in the mid 1970s, I worked with Howard Van Bortel's brother-in-law, in Rochester. They didn't get along....
