I've got 487x on my 72....I did some research about airflow and the 487x returned some pretty impressive numbers. Not as good as cnc aluminum of course, BUT impressive none the less.
I cannot remember the website where I found the info, I will try to find it...also saw an article in CarCraft.
I did a lot of hand work (port/polish/gasket match and cc) on mine, Just put the motor in last week...be ready to spank in another couple of weeks.

The 487x heads were/are not terribly popular because of the size of the combustion chamber...everybody wants that 64 cc stuff...AND, don't discount marine heads when you are looking, just make sure the cooling on the boat was closed loop/watercooled heat exchanger (no salt water running thru the heads)...

Hey 4D...I just remembered...
When I took my heads to the shop, one of them was scratched on the combustion chamber side. I think I remember sliding it across my work bench and then seeing the scratch....about 7 months later when they were ready for the shop??? the scratch looked like a crack..

When I got to Terry's
http://waltersengines.com/

I asked that they take as little as possible off the surface, but I wanted them milled flat, I showed them what I was talking about...they said "If that is a crack, we have some 487x castings to replace it with" I remember feeling a little light headed thinking about all the hand work to get them smooth and even....check out their site, phone number is on the left hand side of the page near the logo. We are in Virginia and I am sure shipping will have to be a consideration...
Give them a call?? great guys to work with

area code is 72417. i don't know what shipping would be. i'm not sure what the heads weigh, or how to check the cost of shipping.

i assume that a 38 and 39 would be compatible. have the same cc chambers, valves, etc.

have the heads ever been worked on? magnafluxed, hand work, etc.

price for the heads?

When I was looking for a set of stock heads for my 72 base 350CI engine I remember hearing a lot of circle track guys liked the 487X heads as they claimed that the intake runners were larger than the regular 487's, thus better breathing and still meet the circle class rules.
Also be aware that both 487 and 487X heads can come with different intake and exhaust valves diameters. Most of them have 1.94 intakes and 1.50 exhaust valves and some have 2.02 intakes and 1.60 exhaust valves, both are stock to the 487 and 487X GM part numbers.
Only way you can tell what you have is to Measure both.
Hopes this helps.
