ZZ502 + Just in time for that winter project
Here's a fresh ZZ502 that has been upsized; both in terms of size and performance.
The block has been punched 0.030 over for a total of 509 cubes. The pistons have been upgraded to SRP so it has some compression; 10.6:1. The cam has also been upgraded so the engine can actually breathe. It now has 238*/247* duration at 0.050" and 0.610" lift on both the intake and exhaust. All in all, these changes will get you in the neighborhood of 600 hp! It also has a set of plasma moly rings with standard tension oil rings so you won't have that oil consumption issue common to factory 502's.
[edit] - If you don't see the pictures, please email & I'll send them to you.
It uses the factory forged steel crank, 7/16" dimple rods, and GMPP aluminum heads.
$5800
New is $8000 for 100 less hp: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NAL-12496963/

It has the original ZZ502 GM Performance Parts 'roval' heads. They are basically the same as the Edelbrock Performer RPM heads and are, in fact, made by Edelbrock from the same castings. I had the original ZZ cam reground by Delta Cams in Tacoma, WA, so it's a good hard steel billet cam, not a cast comp cam. Like the ZZ502, you will have to use a mellonized distributor gear with this cam; about $30 from GM.
Crank is 0.020" under on both the rods and mains - when I took it apart, some trash had been through the motor. The bearings are also set up with the proper clearance; 0.0025" mains, and 0.002" on the rods. The ZZ's are set up way too tight for a performance engine IMHO. I've seen them as tight as 0.0008" on the rods. The block was decked for proper quench, 0.050", and was lightly align-honed so the mains are good and straight. The rest of the motor, other than the pistons/rings and cam mentioned above are the same specs as the original ZZ502.

The motor didn't come apart and was running, but was consuming a lot of oil when I got it. When it was disassembled, the crank/bearings were scored along with one cylinder wall. It appears some dirt or something had gotten into the system at some point in it's previous life.

It's set up to minimize the screwing I'll take selling it there.
Bad time of year? It does have bids.
