The engine code is located on a pad on the block. It is at the base of and in front of the passenger side head.

ENGINE DATE CODE:
The engine date code is a two symbol code cast into the block. This code is located to the right of the distributor on the top rear of the block. A typical code would look like "B1" which decodes as February 1971. The second symbol denotes the year "0" = 1970 and "1" = 1971. The first symbol denotes the month by using the alphabet as shown below:

All 454/365hp motors all came with flat-top pistons, not dished pistons as you have been advised. 454/390 hp pistons will actually have a small dome. Best of luck with your sale.

Ben, are you saying that all 1971 GM lines of cars that came with the optional LS-5 454 were 365 HP? Some 454s were LS-6s, right? I know my '70 Corvette LS-5 originally had domed pistons (now flat top after a rebuild). I was advised that due to today's gasoline if I used domed pistons I could possibly experience fatal engine detonation.

So, in lieu of bonafide testing results that it is a 390 HP engine the engine is probably a 454/365.

I have been told all kinds of things From folks who are in the motor rebuild buisness Like the ad says do your homework. I am not 100% sure if its a 365 horse like my book says or its a 390 horse like one of my engine builders says it is. Do your homework to make sure this is the part you need

all ls-5 engines in 71 were 8.5:1 comprssion with flat top pistons.

ONLY exception was the ls-6. It was 9.0:1, 4 bolt main, rectangular aluminum heads.... and there were only a handful of these Vettes ordered.
