over time the spline dries out and cracks into pieces. the repair (as drgene said) is very straight forward and pretty simple to accomplish. do you actually hear the motor trying to raise or lower? if so, you are in good shape with the mast repair kit.

Yes Sir; first, set car up on stands, Unhook battery. You have to remove the driver's side Exhaust piping & muffler, sometimes you have to have a new stainless steel band, or two, to reinstall this piping. It does help to remove the wheel. The wire loom plug is behind the rear driver's side rear speaker. Gently pushing out the rubber wire plug, to the outside.. Now look at the bolts holding it to the body, will help if you spray Wd or another brand on all bolts, first, this will ad in removing them. Buy A Corvette shop Manual from or made by Helms. This will give you all the info. you will need to do this job. Be Safe, Have a great day. Gene

Yes Sir; I have a AM / FM / CB radio w/Out the antenna. The antenna's are more money, than the radios, or just as much. I need an antenna for a 1982 W/ CB AM / FM Or sell the radio. I have the divider that came with it. It was working when I took it out. Thank's Gene

78 CB antenna mast.
Trying to find the mast cable which is all one piece with the mast is not going to be easy. Don't bother going to GM you won't find it and can't get it in repo. Once you have the antenna on the bench, you have to remove the grayish colored plastic cover, 4 screws. If the cover is black the antenna has been replaced already. It is sealed with a whitish colored silicone as a sealer for the motor. You have to get the broken nylon mast section out, or it will jamb the new mast. The good news is I have found that sometimes in icy weather ice forms around the bezel on top of the rear fender and the mast won't work. If you turn the radio off with ice around the bezel it may have just jumped the track on the motor winding pulley inside and its not broken. Slim chance but I have seen that before. You can get a 79 mast section only but the tip is different than 78, and the 79 comes with what looks like a fishing hook on the end and has no way to attach to the motor in the 78 antenna.I always wanted to try the 79 style just cutting off the fishing hook but haven't tried that yet so I can't say that would work.If you don't find one I have quite a few here standard and CB.
