LM1 265hp/350ft-lbs vs 290hp/326ft-lbs
Has anyone noticed that the LM1 engines that offer 265hp have 350 torque and the 290 versions have 326?
I wonder why that is? I'm thinking that I'd be better off just getting the 265 version because of the slight torque advantage and it's cheaper.
*thoughts?*
Thanks, Les

Very similar to the old L48/L82 debate. In this case, the 290 hp version has some better internals (like pistons), and the L82 cam. It will respond better to an improved set of heads --and other mods -- than the base engine will. Plus you won't need to upgrade the cam.

Cam is only difference.

I just verified that new 290hp mtr only has a bigger cam - same pistons. Found the parts numbers in my 2004 GM Performance Parts cataloge and Chevy sb parts interchange manual.
Cam in 290hp mtr is fine as is (designed with ram exh manifolding in mind) - soo really only decisions are price and cam preference.
Now its a bit of a love/hate relationship with cast pistons. Theyr'e the quitest and seal the best - but also the weakest. Sorry i'm no piston expert but from what i've read stock cast are good for up to 1hp/c.i. (350hp). As long as rpm stays less than 5500 they should work fine in that GoodWrench 350 LM1.
I vote for the 290hp mtr as its bolt in and go. Not many like to rip open a brand new mtr for upgrades unless they are comfortable doing so. And hey u can always change heads and cam with the block in the car later. cardo0

you are on the right track regardless of the one that you pick.... you have a choice between two good engines, i was looking hard at the 290HP engine before i decided to go with a locally built engine, i bet those upgrades in the articles i sent you would work equally as well with the 290 hp, just w/o using the XE268 cam....although maybe not as much HP and torque
and if bragging rights mean anything to you the 290 HP is considered by GM to be a High Performance engine
