Moroso Spiral flow vs Magnaflow vs Flowmaster
Does anyone know how the Moroso Spiral Flow muffler compares to Magnaflow (glasspack 4in round type) and flowmaster mufflers. I am looking to find out which is louder which has better performance and so on. I currently have 40 series flowmasters, looking to switch to something else. I have also looked at some chambered mufflers. I need to get more information on these others though. I am trying to make an exhaust that is free flowing, not rediculously loud, and gives horse power and torque close to open headers. I know its not gonna be easy. Just wondering if anyone has some expierence with these. i am gonna use them in a custom side pipe set up. Thats why i am looking into the ones with a 4in round case. I know abou the spiral turbo baffles but I am looking for a different sound than that. Thanks.

I can virtually guarantee that the Magnaflows are the quietest. I have them on three of my cars and they are all very quiet...for performance mufflers. Caveat...I'm running 4x6 ovals in all of them, though, so they would be a bit quieter than 4" round.

The Moroso and 4" glasspack will be rediculously loud.
The Moroso is just 8" of actual "muffler" and 99% of the exhaust would never hit the "glass" of a 4" glasspack muffler (unless it is a louvered core which is bad for flow).
A 2 1/2" perferated core glasspack will support 500 (a guy reported here no HP loss @630 HP and 20 TQ loss vs open headers) and not be rediculously loud. It still will be loud. I'm running a pair in my sidepipes and it rattles the pictures on my walls inside my house when I'm idling in the garage, but I'm still quieter than many full size trucks on the roads.

I have a 4 inch exhaust with flowmaster triple chamber mufflers and it is really loud. I set of car alarms idleing past. But it is behind a 540" 1080 HP engine but it sounds good.

I should clarify the round spiral flow mufflers have a 4in diameter but they 12in long body, a total length of 18in. The magnaflows have a 4in diameter , 14in case. Both have a 2 1/2 inlet and outlet. I know that sidepipes are going to be somewhat loud no matter what, but I am trying to get them to flow better than the inserts that hooker sells and still have an aggressive tone but not so loud that it sucks to drive the car.

I hadn't realized you are the same one who posted the other thread.
The ID of the side tube where the muffler fits is about 3 3/4". The OD of the tube is 4". You will never get a 4" OD muffler in there witout major surgery.
So, the way I see it, you have 2 options for cheap high flow Hooker inserts:
1) Fab up some auger inserts as mentioned in the previous thread. You can also weld 2 or 3 inserts together to help quiet it down as needed.
2) Fab up some 2 1/2" (or 3" if you think necessary) perferated core glasspacks. I bought just the perferated core tube and then welded disks from my old Hooker inserts to them. Then, I wrapped the core tube with muffler fiberglass and slid it in the Hooker tube. So, my 4" side tube is the muffler outer "case". Here is a pic of my blown out inserts after 30k miles. Another option here would be to buy a pair of 4" OD glasspacks with a 2 1/2" core and hack off the outer case to make it fit. Thrush makes perferated core ones - http://www.dynomax.com/documents/thrushglass.pdf that are cheap. Also, if you think 2 1/4" is enough, they make one with a 3 1/2" case that would fit much easier. Someone on this forum is running this setup (Yellow 72???).
I got 2 stainless steel 2 1/2" perferated core tubes + 10 square feet of muffler fiberglass from a small muffler company called Heartthrob exhaust. I paid $40 for the lot. My contact info for them is no longer valid. There is another forum member (Marks69BB??) who has contacted them successfully and they made something up for him. I used to have a PM with the details, but that has since been lost.
All of this is from memory, so I may be wrong on some of it, but it wouldn't hurt to PM the members I've mentioned for clarification.

Yep, I used the 2 1/4" perforated core Dynomax Magnum glasspacks and welded on the old hooker discs as well. They are reasonably quiet at idle and have a deep throaty roar when squeezed. They seem to flow just fine for my little mouse, then again I'm not running 1000 HP like some and need to pass a bazzilion cfm

Thanks for the input guys. This helps me out alot. I did find a place called sweet-thunder that makes some inserts aswell. I believe they are chambered styled mufflers though. I listened to the sound clip and wow do they sound good. They may be louder than what I want though. They offer a 2 1/2in inside diameter tube that slips into the hooker side pipe. Does anyone here have any expierence with these? I'm sorry to keep asking questions, I tend to over-research things but atleast I get it right the first time ( for the most part ). Thanks again, I really do appreciate all the help. I hope to be able to return the favor sometime.

I've got the moroso spiral flows in the sidepipes of my '69 w/ a 427. I get compliments wherever I go. They give a nice idle with a nice powerful sound especially past 2500 rpm. At 55-60 mph down the highway it is fairly loud but definitely not annoying, just a nice roar. I'd equate it to a level around most Harleys with pipes. It also sounds MUCH better than any glasspack I've ever heard. I cut the case off and the tack welds inside with a grinder wheel. It isn't that hard really. I tacked a round piece on the inside tube just to make sure it wouldnt be too loud. They slide right down into the tube with a nice snug fit. Then I just tacked them into place and slid the pipes back on.
