Default Speedometer Cables on a '75 - Upper and Lower

From what I've read, there are two cables on the '75 speedometer; an upper and a lower. Are they talking about one that moves the MPH needle, and the other is the odometer reset cable? Or are there two cables that operate the needle?

Instead of a one-piece cable from the transmission to the back of the speedometer, it is a 2-piece cable with a connector in the middle. My guess is it was done that way as Chevy was moving towards offering cruise control.

Yep.....two pieces make one cable. I had to replace mine after mine melted to my chambered exhaust

Default Transducer

Kalaway,
Big Fish and Stewart are right. In cars with cruise control, there is a transducer ( I think that's what it's called!!!) that has an input cable from the trans and an output cable to the speedo head. Hence, an "upper" and "lower" cable. On cars without c.c., there was no transducer fitted and the cables were presumably just screwed together. I have a 1983 Hoden V8 Commodore with just that set-up, but with a transducer and c.c. GM Holden almost always copy their ideas from GM (USA) so it is fair to assume that this is the set-up on a Chevrolet vehicle that's a few years older than the Commodore.

Thanks for the info. I have the non CC car so my two cables would be connected together. My speedometer works intermittently so its probably a defective cable, or its just old.

Your problem might be the drive gear at the end of the cable. Usually cables work or they don't work.
