back then, marketing wouldn't allow badges for any engine but the biggest displacement that was available. For 1973 and 1974 - the 454 was available and they were the only ones to get badging.

Spooch,
Check the fifth digit of the VIN. a J=L48, a T=L82 and a Z=454.
Of course, then check that the last six digits of the engine number match the last six digits of the VIN. If that all matches, then you have an L82.

L-82 is a fender script on the 1980 models, but run the numbers on the '74. Anybody can stick L-82 badges on anything.

"Hood emblems designating the L-82 first appeared in 1975, but some 1975 L-82 models were built without the emblems."

I have a matching numbers '74 L-82 without the hood badges. I've thought about putting on the hood decal that says L-82 = but haven't decided yet...

I remember reading this somewhere; that marketing did not want to reward those that didn't buy the biggest displacement engine offered... so they only allowed special badging on the 454 during that brief era.
