Gary,

Since you asked, yes I am definitely doing this myself (with the help of your paper and probably asking questions) when the time comes. The time was probably many thousands of miles ago, especially since it ran with only the oil that was below the line of the lowest leak (front seal mostly) for a long time. Currently I can't afford the parts and prefer to keep the car going... for now. I intend to do the a 5 or 6-link modification at the same time so I will be removing the retaining clips. Any thoughts on that?

And for money, how much would you estimate for one rebuild? Assuming the major parts are intact. The answer to that may become moot as I spiral ever-deeper into while-I'm-at-it syndrome. I'm really dedicated to doing this with the best quality parts, and the best way the first time. That mentality leads to very slow progress for a jobless college student.

Thanks,
Chris

Thanks

I was actually thinking about cutting off the yokes at the clips to give more clearance, but that makes me reconsider... However if the 6th link is designed properly, the yoke should not be able to touch the center pin (or touch the housing on the outside) and cutting it off would just give me a little more room to play with. Hmm... Anyways, that's another matter entirely. Yes, I should look up the prices for the parts instead of being lazy and just asking

Thanks,
Chris

Chris being a college student gives you an opportunity to research the job and then form the correct decision on the direction of the job

Gary, it looks like you do great work. My differential is coming your way at some point. I'll have to convince the wife.

Anyway, at the beginning of the thread you mentioned that you don't like the springs in the differential. How is it that you can remove them? What is their purpose and how is eliminating them better. What does it accomplish? Thanks.

Are you referring to an optional step or is there a mistake you made? Did you debur and polish the case, it doesn't look like it from the picture.

We have a winner! The owner didn't want it polished, just setup. No mistake just pleasing the customer.... until the carrier cracks in HD use- hope not.

So, Gary. I win the "no-prize". Where should I send you my certified check for $10k to recieve it, or was it some money you needed transferred out of a foreign bank in Nigeria?

I look forward to hearing the good news (hopefully) about my steering box.

Mike, no need to send 10K, I think you've been hanging around EBay watching those vette "deals" !!!

I'll let you know what the box looks like and that shouldn't be 10k either, maybe just $9999.99 LOL!

On that carrier it was radiused slightly by the owner just not to the level I prefer them. It will probably be fine for a long time. The gears are used 336's out of a low mileage '76 and they spun without any noise at all! I was impressed they setup as good as they did.
