Default intake and carb combo w/stock hood

Hi All,
I have a 1973 454 w/Holley 4150 and stock intake. I'd like explore the possibility of a new intake and carb set-up that will fit under the stock hood. I'm sure there are intakes that perform better than the original and the carb has been on the car since I bought it in 1984. It has been rebuilt, but i think I'm ready for a new combo, if one can be had that will fit under the stock '73 hood.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Al

I have an Edelbrock 1406 carb and Edelbrock Performer 2-0. You need to use a drop base air filter housing, and check your clearances carefully. Mine had a slight dent in the hood when I bought it due to someone leaving the cleaner mounting stud too long. But it will fit.

On a 73 - 454 there is only 1 choice of intake other than stock that will fit - Torker II. The 68-69 aluminum 427 may, but will carry a super price tag to get.

The options are limited. Stay with stock intake, T2 or get a new hood or bond on a high rise (L88) scoop. The Edelbrock 1406 needs a spacer adaptor to mate to the stock intake and with the fuel inlet a special drop base is needed. I have tried them all on a 73 -454 and to go with a good flowing intake ie Weiand, Edelbrock etc you need to change the hood.

Well, I'll have to go look again, but I sure thought I had an Edelbrock manifold and carb under the hood of my '73 454" car.

Just out of curiousity, would a q-jet fit under there? I've never, really compared the heights of carbs before.

Discontinued Holley Street Dominator will fit. Ive got one with 1/2 inch spacer on a 1970 454 with stock hood. Its a single plane manifold of better design than the Torquer II. I reworked mine further.

However if you have any of the following:
• auto with stock convertor
• tall rear gears
• stock cam
• low compression
I'd stay with the stock manifold

I had a Street Dominator on my car before I went to rectangle port heads and I ended up putting the stock cast iron unit back on because I ended up with a slight stumble off-idle that I couldn't tune out.

Thanks for all the input. I really don't want to change the stock lines of the car, so changing the hood is not an option for me. The 73 stock air cleaner is a drop base type and fits over the current Holley. Maybe I'll just try updating the carb. The easiest fit would probably be a new Holley HP. Anybody have experience with Demons or Edlebocks on the stock chevy intake?

so is the stock manifold a decent manifold? I mainly want low and mid range performance.

I believe the stock 4 bbl was a Rochester. I am the 2nd owner and I bought it with the Holley. The stock intake seems very competant; I was just looking around for any ideas about newer intake technology.
My 73 has headers, is bored 60 over and has a slightly modified cam. It dyno'd at 385 hp at 5200 rpm, more than enough power to get me in trouble real fast. I didn't intend to bore it out when I took it in to clean it up, but was told by the builder it had been bored 30 over previously, but the block had not been decked on the earlier rebuild. In any event, it runs well and is 110 hp over the stock. With little work done on it over the past 6 years, I thought I'd treat myself to a newer intake/carb combination. Maybe I'll just go with the carb.

Yes, the above statement is true if the manifold came off of the 390hp engine. I have one of these manifolds on my 454, and it has larger ports compared to the Torker II intake.

The stock LS-4 intake is ok for low end torque, actually its very good for low end torque but not as good as the L-36 intake as far as midrange power goes. I have all 3 possible intake combinations available, but have only tried the LS-4 and L-36 intakes on my engine, the torker 2 I haven't tried. I think the L-36 is probably the best compromise of the 3 with good low end and good midrange and ok top end (5300 or under rpm), I did do a little port work with my L-36 but it was more blend work then anything else, nothing major. The intake your looking for on an L-36 is the 68-69 427 390hp, this is aluminum with a spreadbore (quadrajet pattern), it does however take some odd carb gaskets do to how the heat crossover passage is designed, but they are available. The L-36 is however not cheap to come by, since they are a fairly rare intake so expect to pay between 250-350 for a good one.

Sorry to be so tardy in checking again. Just looked under the stock hood of my '73 Big Block. Carb is Edelbrock 1406 with cheapo Erson air cleaner (dented slightly to allow for elec. choke clearance). Air cleaner is 14"x2 1/2". Manifold is Edelbrock Performer 2-O, part no. 2161. Clearance is tight, but they are there.

I would like to know how this is possible. A 4150 Holley has a different bolt spacing from a stock '73 intake. Are you using an adapter? If so, that is taking up space that could be better used by a larger air filter. What you need to do is get a spread bore Holley or, better yet, a Rochester Quadrajet.
