Default How to remove block drain plugs?

Is there a trick to removing the 1/4" threaded drain plugs on the side of the block just above the oil pan? These have a hex socket end and I've already started to strip the hex. I've heard that these are installed with epoxy sealant so they don't leak but they seem impossible to loosen. Any advice?

I got mine out by heating the drain plug, not the block, almost till red then taking a 6 piont socket and tape the socket wrench to loosen it

Try a 6 point socket. That is what I used to get mine out both times this winter.

Default if you are successful in getting them out

put anti-seeze on the threads before re-installing. You may want to use a hex/allen head plug when you reinstall.

Once you get them out you can replace them with radiator draincocks. That's what my engine builder did on my big block.

Default block plugs

I heartily second the suggestion of replacing them with radiator draincocks. Being brass, they won't corrode and get stuck like the plugs will and will make draining and flushing MUCH easier. There's a lot of old coolant left in the block on a "normal" drain if you don't drain the block through these ports.
