Default fuel vapor solenoid

on my 82 i am getting a fuel vapor smell .have changed the canister filter.how do i check the vapor solenoid switch?at idle i do not have any power to the switch .what tells the switch to open and close ?

Do you have a shop manual? I have one and I will look it up this evening. If you dont have a shop manual get one. It is well worth the investment. They sell on ebay for considerably less than what you can buy them for at a supplier. I paid $20 for mine.

i have a factory assembly manual .it shows pics .i dont know how to test the solenoid .thanks for all help

the purge solenoid is the same as the EGR solenoid (the EGR solenoid just has a vac adapter thing on it) If you have a scannre you can see if the system is activating the purge solenoid (which happens @ part throttle during closed loop oepration if I remember correctly) from the canister purge field..it's a simple on/off switch.
