What is the difference between the 1976 'L48 and 'L82'
Hi, I am new to the Corvette world, and was wondering if someone could shed some light on the difference between the L48 and L82. I have an L48, but have no idea what makes it an L48. Also, I know my car has a 350 in it, but is it a small block a big block, I don't know the difference. If I had a book on Vette's I could figure it out on my own, but, since I am a poor student :D , I've too many other books to contend with.
TIA

You are going to get lots of really great technical answers but let me start off with a less technical one based on what I have learned here in the past 8 months.
In '76 only a small block was available. The guys that have big blocks are the owners of the older C3's; 427's and 454's that blow us away with little trouble. These are REALLY powerful, pre-emissions junk cars and you would feel the difference right away if you drove one of these after driving yours (I tried it- whoa!). The L82 and L48 are both 350's. The L-82 has a little more horsepower, different cam , heads and 4 bolt main bearings that I am told make it more bulletproof. The L48 was the standard 350 available in '76 and years around that time.

Here are the differences between the 1973 L48 and L82. '73 was the first year for the L82. These differences should be close for all years L82 except for HP and exhaust systems. The L48 was the basic passanger car engine that was available in alot of Chevys. For 73 and there after the L82 was the high output small block for Chevy.

According to my Corvette Black Book: '76 L-48 @180HP, '76 L-82 @ 210HP...Block # 3970010 for both. Heads # 333882 for both L-48 & L-82. 8.5 compression for L-48, 9.0 compression for L-82. Spend all the time U can here friend...theres a wealth of info here on our beloved C-3s... :seeya
