Default GM Crate Motor 260hp / 290hp???

For those that have either the 260hp or 290hp GM Crate Motor, is the 290hp worth the $300 extra? The basic difference is a better crank and hotter cam I believe...

I researched both of these extensively when I was exploring engine options. The other thing to consider, although it is not too important with a new GM engine, is that the 260hp comes with a 3-year, 100,000 mile warranty, and the 290hp only comes with a 1-year, 12,000 mile warranty.

The only difference in the 2 engines is the camshaft.

290hp - The camshaft has .450” intake and .460” exhaust lift with hydraulic flat tappets

260hp - The camshaft has .390” intake and .410” exhaust lift with hydraulic flat tappets

Your right, the cranks are the same even though one is called stock and the other is called nodular iron... $300 is NOT worth it for a cam only upgrade. For $190 you can get a Lunati Voodoo cam & lifters...

Either spend the extra $300 now, or wait until the warranty expires and then upgrade.

Default I am quite happy with my 350 / 290

I have put over 15,000 miles on it in the last year.

It was only $1,700 delivered to my door.

Obviously more is better.....
It goes fast enough that it can get me in trouble....
It's got a nice idle and it moves when I kick it in the a&&

Just like everyone on the forum I am looking forward to some more improvements to my car.

The first is going to be a fuel injection system.
I have been looking at the Holley Commander 950 Throttle Body Fuel Injection System.
The second is going to be a 200-4r transmission.

Why not just go and get yourself a ZZ4 motor? I purchased an original ZZZ motor the first one of the series for $2100 still in the crate back in the 90's. It sits in my Street Rod with just over a Thousand miles on it. Its a 350-345 HP motor. Plenty of power.

It depends on what year. I believe some of them were as low as 225hp.

However, I believe the hp ratings on the GM crate engines is without accessories and transmission.

Another ?, do these motors (260 & 290's) come with the threads for the ball stud (4 spds)? Everything else should be fine. The reason for choosing this motor is indeed $$$ (I'll have 2 kids in college this year) and also the stock L-82 w/370's and a 4 spd is a lot of fun. I don't need anything more then this setup... it's only going to get me in trouble

Even if there are no threads, not a problem, making a bracket is a no brainer.

Hmm... more than twice the price for 90 more HP. On the other hand, you do get a spiffy orange balancer and a 3 yr 'labor warranty' for your money. Woohoo!
