Default 77 Vette Headlight dimmer

Ok guys I really need help this time.

I bought this 77 Vette 3 weeks ago tomorrow. Lots of little things needed fixing including the turn signal switch and headlight dimmer switch.

So I ordered both. I disassembled the steering column and I saw that the problem with the dimmer switch was not the switch at all, but the fact that there are 2 mechanical parts missing.

According to the GM parts manuals this dimmer switch arrangement is peculiar only to the 77 with Tilt/Telescoping wheel.

There are 4 parts which allow the Windshield Washer Switch & Pivot (1) , to operate the dimmer switch (6) which is located farther down the column next to the ignition switch.

Here's the parts list:

1) Switch & Pivot (1977 only) 10.163 Group 10.163 GM# 7827152
2) Shield, Tilt Lever Opening (1977 only) Group 6.514 GM# 7827048
3) Spring, Pin Preload (1977 only) Group 2.459 GM# 7828351
4) Actuator, Dimmer Switch Rod (1977 only) Group 2.459 GM#7827028
5) Rod, Dimmer Switch (1977 only) Group 2.459 GM#7829984
6) Switch Asm, Dimmer (1977 only) Group 2.459 GM#7819657

So the problem is that a previous owner has apparently lost items 2 & 3. I havn't had a chance yet to call my GM dealer, but I suspect that the parts are discontinued.

I really don't want to put the steering column back together without fixing the dimmer switch, but I am at a loss as to where I am going to get the parts.

I would considering making them if I knew exactly what they are supposed to look like. The diagram in the parts manual is too small to make them out.

HELP!!!!!

A lot of these 77's were converted back to the old foot switch high beam, so that's also an alternative if you choose.

Default Giving up on column mounted dimmer in my 77

Ok, I give up. I have ordered a floor mounted dimmer switch like 68 - 76 used. Do I need to cut a hole and put this throgh the firewall, or does it mount inside? Could someone send me a picture of what this looks like installed? Thanks in advance.

It's just installed under the carpet. You don't have to cut holes in the floor.

Welcome to the joys of owning a 77 - the biggest one-year weirdo in the Corvette lineup since the 68s.
