Default Help With 454 Intake Manifold, 73 Stingray

I Want To Put A Aluminum Intake Manifold On A 73 Stingray. It Has A 454 Eng. And The Factory Cast Iron Manifold Looks Lowered Down To Accomodate The Hood Clearance Issue. Anyone Have Any Info On Where Or What Manifold Will Fit Under The Stock Hood. Edelbrock Says The Performer Manifold Will Not Fit Under A Stock Vette Hood. Changing The Hood Is Out Of The Question Also!!

I used a Torker II.
I have since changed to a taller intake with an L-88 hood.
If you want it I will dig around in the attic to see if I can find it.

If you have Rectangle port heads the LS6 "pancake" manifold will also fit.

A friend of mine checked all the aluminum intake manifolds to get one to fit under the stock hood on his 72 454. He did find one but you had to use an air cleaner that was so low it looked like it was chocking the car for air. I think he had less than 1/2 inch clearance between the air cleaner lid and the top of the carb. The bottom of the air cleaner dropped way down around the carb.

He ended up going with an L88 hood and regular open element air cleaner.

I stuck with the stock intake on mine. But I'm going more for originality.

The 73 LS4 had oval port heads, I put retangle on mine yrs ago
and used a tarantula manifold with a holley, GM 14 inch drop
base air cleaner. The old single plane tarantula was more of a race
manifold it was the same hieght or taller then the chevy high-rise
manifolds of the time. There is a lot more room under the 73-79
cowl hoods then there is on 68-72 big block hoods. A performer is
not as tall as the old tarantula or factory GM high-rise manifold.
With a drop base it would fit but with the old factory 73 air
cleaner made to work with the cowl hood that air cleaner is taller
and that is probably why edelbrock says it will not fit.

OK GUYS I'M NEW TO THE C3 SCENE! I HAVE NO idea if he has the stock hood on there now nor does he know (it was on there when he bought the car 16 yrs ago). i can tell you that the hood looks like a mini cowl ind. the air cleaner kinda sits up into the hood and pulls air form the cowl part and it looks like it had a dual snorkle set-up on it at one time (duct work is gone) is this the (L-88) hood that you guys are talking about or does this sound like a stock hood for this 73??? i can get some pics if needed. thanks for the help!! i believe it has ovel port heads and he wants to stick with the rochester carb. i will know something definte monday on the heads.

Sounds just like the air cleaner I threw away in late 1973.

PICTURES always help, lets face it we are also into Vetteporn, throw up a couple shots of the hood and it will be easier to give recommendations.

I have no pictures bought an LS4 454 vette new in 73 moded the
engine three different ways in 24 months and sold the car, don't even
have an outside picture of the car anymore. But the air cleaner and
hood he described are original.
