Default Block Bore - Rebuildable?

I have been offered a 350 block bored .040 over. What is the rule of thumb on boring the cyclinder, when is too much?

Is .040 ok?

General rule of boring is .030 over first. .040 next .060 max. Was your block damaged/rusty in any way for someone to go .040 over, or just high millage? I would inquire why. Damage would make me skeptical about the rest of the block.
If it's honed a few thou under .040, that will give you the option to have it hone clearanced for the specific pistons that you'll use.

.040 is OK. Probably a high mileage motor core.
