Default My new (Sort of) Side Pipes.

Here they are, pics of my new sidepipes that I bought from a fellow forum member.

Hooker supercomps. I think they are 1 3/4 or 1 7/8 diameter tubing. Not sure but they are definately bigger than the 1 5/8 headers I had before. Also I believe they are Jet Hot coated...

I took out the super quite inserts, whatever they were, and installed some hooker maxflows. Holy crap those things are loud. I like it... ....The neighbors I'm sure don't feel the same way...

I also bought a set of the new Stainless Heat Shields from Steel Shields, made by Dean, here on the forum. Beautiful product.... ...They work great and I intend to take some temperature readings from the pipes themselves and the shields and then post the difference. Should be interesting.

Well I've jabbered on enough...Here they are...

They look Great!

Two questions...

1) Do you have a link for the Steel Shields? I'd like to buy them for my car too. I've already burned myself and I'd like some safetly margin for the wife and my son.

2) How do the shield mount to the car? Do you any pics of how they mount?

I guess that's three questions. Thanks in advance.

1. http://www.steelshields.com/ Call and talk to Gary. He is a stand up guy. 402-369-0386. They are amazingly cooler than the pipes themselves. I am very impressed with how well they remain cool....I got out of the car tonight after driving for about 30 minutes, it's 55 degrees outside. I opened the door and placed my knuckles on the shields and I could leave them there with no problems....I put my hand near the pipe, about 1/8th" from the pipe and I could feel that it would not have been a good idea to get any closer....

2. The sheilds mount with 2 giant hose clamps wrapped around the pipes with a special piece of cloth under them to prevent scratches. Really easy to install and gives a really clean look.

3. I don't have pics of how they actually mount but the web site does and its pretty self explanatory once you see them...

I believe the color is corvette light blue and it is supposedly original to the car. I cross referenced the VIN # and the paint and interior codes and it all checks out. It is supposedly an original 32000 mile 77 L-82 4-speed (or at least it was before I got a hold of it). Whether or not it truly is, who knows.....

Thanks for all the guys....

Will.....

Wow, I even like this look better than the original side pipes.

Did you have side pipes to start, as I have rear pipes and was thinking of changing to side?

Do you notice any power difference or just sound?

...

I did not have side pipes, they are also a new addition to the car. I spent a bunch of money on an undercar exhaust system and was neve happy with the work. I finally gave up and decide that I was going to sell my under car and go with the side pipes, seeing as those were what I really wanted anyways...

I had a 2.5 inch with an x-pipe and straight through magnaflows, first and then had flowmaster 50's on it. I noticed a decrease in performance when I switched to the flowmasters. However I'm not to sure that I have anymore now than I did with the magnaflows...

I need to do some tuning with my wideband, but once I get it right, I plan to put the car on a dyno and see if there is any difference...

Default Thanks

Thanks for the link info. I was gonna rechrome the pipes but was toying with the ceramic coat idea, figuring its a better insulator anyway. I think the coated pipes with the shields is DEFINATELY choice!!

Kind of Pricey at $350.00 WOW. But I guess cheaper than a leg or a hearing aid after someone yells when they get burned lol.

Ordered mine today from the website! Stingray with Flags. Can't wait to get them. The installation looks very easy and clean and now I won't have to worry about my 9 year old burning his leg.

My wife learned better in her early days with Harley's so she would have been ok with bare pipes but I don't think the little guy needs third degree burns from dad's car. Those are better lessons left for when he becomes a rebelious teenager.

I was hesitant to buy side pipes for a long time until I saw these shields....They sold me on the whole thing....

They work great. I can't tell you how many times I have gotten out of the car and inadvertantly touched the pipes in one way shape or form...If I had not had the shields on them I'm sure I would've figured out not to do that anymore by now.....

However, you still have to watch your shins when you are working in the engine bay and leaning over the motor with your toes under the car....Your shins will tuck up against the collectors quite nicely....Ask me how I know...Glad I was wearing jeans...

As to being rather pricey...To me it was worth every penny, and I think they look great...I really couldn't be happier....

I just wish I could say the same about the muffler choice...Still working on that one....

Later guys...

Will
