Valve Spring Splash Shield ?

Valve Spring Splash Shield ?
I have a 69 with a 350/350 motor and the valve springs are knocking against the aluminum valve cover. I noticed that the valve springs have splash shields on the top of the spring and appear to be what is making the noise. The motor was rebuilt a few thousand miles before I purchased the car.
Did this motor come with the splash shields when new?
Is there any harm in taking them off?
Will I need to put a shim in if I take the shields off?
Thanks for any and all help/advice.

Those shields along with the "o" ring below the keepers seal the top of the retainer are what keeps the oil off the valve stem and being drawen down into the cylinder when the valve is opened. Don't remove them unless you put a positive type seal on the guide first. Manuel
