Default difference between ph5 and ph30 oil filters?

so whats the difference between the PH 5 and PH 30 oil filters? these are fram numbers and they both are for 350s the funny thing is the PH 30 is for the higher performance 350s and the ph5 is for caprices and impalas....the funny thing is the PH 5 is twice the size of the PH30? what gives?

Typically, big cars & trucks have more ground clearance than the others ... and CAN accept a longer filter with no clearance issue. You can run a long filter on a low car ... but you must accept the risk it may drag or hang on something ... if that happens in traffic you'll probably damage/lose the motor before you can get it pulled over & stopped ... fire risk too. You know the risks; your choice, your decision.

You'll like this.

Go to http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/index.asp and select manufacturer's part no. and put in each filter and compare the specs.

My wife's new Caravan uses a funky little short filter, but thru this site I was able to find a common Ford Filter that is regular length that I now use in it. Absolutely the same specs other than length.

You can also bring up a complete list of engines a specific filter fits.

Hi

As long as the filter is not any lower than the oil pan, it should be OK.
A bigger filter ( longer ) will be more free flowing due to a bigger available surface where the oil has to make it through the filter medium.
I'm using a long PH13 on my BB, even with a oil coller thermostatic adaptor plate in between , and the filter still doesn't sit lower than the pan.

interesting the wix version of the regular pass car ph5 has an anti drain back valve and the ph30 version does not. i wonder why? everything else is the same except for height.

wouldn't we want an anti drain back valve?

The Fram will let unfiltered oil back into the system if the filter is at full capacity., whereas Wix will not. I holds the unfiltered oil back until it too can pass through.

Not to get into the heated debates again (you can search the net for plenty of studies), but you don't want Fram.

I recommend a Wix 51061 for the C3. It's a 1 qt filter and very good quality.

Agree with zwede.....too many studies show the Fram to be of poor quality. The Wix 51061 is a quality filter that is fairly priced.

WIX is the best in all filters. Look at the tests/studies

Well you'll hear all kinds of ideas on this. But the anti drain back valve is mainly there for Hyd. lifter engines to help prevent lifter bleed down when not running. Mechanical lifters don't need such things, as the valve does add a small amonut of restriction to the system. Race type filters usally do not have the valve and usally have much thinker metal to them also. This is to keep them from blowing up with the dummy in the car reving the engine before the engine oil is at temp. Manuel

I use the short filter because the long filter touches the headers. It would be a chore to remove the headers to change the filter. Not to mention how hot the oil would get inside the filter.

Timely post. I had all these filters on my shelf and wanted to know the differences. Have PH13, PH5 and PH30.

I found a Fram info line and gave them a call: 800-890-2075 then 2. Funny they didn't give me all the same info listed here. They said the PH13 is the older version without the anti-drain back feature and not recommended any more. The PH5 and PH30 were interchangeable and had the anti-drainback feature.

Go figure. Ralph

interesting....i really wasn't asking about the quality of the fram filters but rather more interested in why certain applications used one particular length of filter as opposed to the other when they are all 350s

Default 2 Qt. Filters

Those two quart filters came from the Chevrolet truck line (427).

Orignial was the PF 832. Wicks still makes a two quart filter 5179453 that is a sub for the 832. I run them on my 1970 454. The filter hangs down a smig below a BB oil pan, but not enough to make me nervous. The tie rods hang down further.

Not only does this filter provide more filtering area, there is more surface area exposed to the outside air for cooling.

What was way cool, the original AC Delco filters had an aluminum housing with a large 12 pt. nut cast into the bottom for removal. Guess it was too cool of an idea to let it continue for any length of time. Wish I had purchased a case of them. !

My car came with the shorty,
I am able to use the long one.
I figured it had to due with num quarts
it took to fill. With the long one I need an
extra 1/2 quart. So 5 1/2 with filter change
(long one) vs 5 even with shorty.
I thought the drain back has to do with
mounting angle, horz vs vert.
I know some filters have a by-pass factor.
I used to use Fram, before the company was
bought restructured, now the filters have a
bad wrap (justified). I like Ac and use PF25.
I can't find it so I use PF454 (short)
or PF 1215? (Long)
It is getting hard to Find Ac in my area, Fram is
everywhere. The cross-over books show all kinds of
different nums. Last time I needed one it took
a bunch of stores and reading.
Same with my oil of choice, I can't find it like
I used to. 20-50 Syntech. The weights are 5-30
New cars use this.
I didn't enjoy my last oil/filter change, I had to settle
with different versions and run around town looking
20 min job turned into 1 hour 1/2.

I live in San Jose, and have never seen a Wix filter before. The stores I go to only carry Fram, Purolator, Bosch and namebrand.

Where do you find Wix filters, or do they have to be ordered over the internet.

Around here Oreilly stocks Wix. I also think NAPA's filters are actually Wix.

I have always used the longer "truck" filter because it cost the same as the little one. And I have always used AC. Last time I changed oil and I got the filter off I noticed that the new filter was about a half inch shorter than the old one. Price was still the same!!
