Idle Solenoid - 68 Tri
I've posted my issue before re: loss of idle on my 68 with a/c and all accessories running. Majority indicated I need idle solenoid. I was looking at a 69 Tri power with a/c in Fact Book by M. F. Dobbins (pg. 94) and note the existence of idle solenoid. Based on this 69 setup, it would seem that my 68 should have an idle solenoid, but it doesn't. Not sure if the idle solenoid was added in 69, or somehow the idle solenoid on my 68 has gone missing over th years. I've only had the car the past 1.5 years.
Does anyone have any insight as to whether the center Holley carb on a 68 Tri w/ a/c came from the factory with an idle solenoid? Did the 67 400hp with a/c come with an idle solenoid?
Next issue is where do I get a solenoid for the Holley and how do I hook it up? Would assume it ties into the on/off for the a/c, is anyone aware of any documentation of how to hook it up? Thanks!

There is a decal with idle specs under the hood.
Sometimes the air is on to set idle. sometimes not.
Also the solinoid should be mentioned as well. Some have it some don't
Sorry I don't have your specs

The bracket that holds the solenoid is the issue... you are not going to find it anywhere except on somebody elses car.
It is unique to GM TriPower.
"Holy Grail" status.

I'm in contact with a machinist that has offered to make one out of billet aluminum for me if I can come up with a solenoid (probably off of a Q-jet since they're so common) that will work. The cool part about this is that it will be made on a CNC machine, so I'll have the program once it's done and tested. This guy builds robot arms and such for undersea exploration and the space program, so I'm guessing he'll do a nice job! Real gearhead too, his daily driver is a sleeper Skylark with a monster 455 drivin' the wheels. Drops the kids off to school in it...

Thanks all for the info, very helpful. And now the agony of feeling "helpless".... I enjoy the special status that comes with owning a Tripower vehicle, but not the aspect re: parts procurement. It's just not the TriPower, but the 68 in general. Fortunately for me, this is the first part in 1.5 years that I've had an issue sourcing for my '68.
Wrencher, what is the timing of you getting the CNC'd version of the bracket? How can I get a hold of you to stay in the loop with your progress?

Here is some more info I am assembling into a spreadsheet...
A/C Solenoid & Bracket Option C60 Sheet C6 1969
Throttle Lever Extension 9- 3940922
Throttle Lever Extension Attaching Screw (40-60 in-lbs) 8- 191985
Throttle Lever Extension Attaching Nut 10- 271172
Solenoid Bracket 7- 3940916 (edit)
Solenoid Bracket Clamp 5- 3940918
Solenoid 4- 1114418
Forward Bracket Retaining Bolt (84-120 in-lbs) 6- 180080
Rear Bracket Retaining Bolt (84-120 in-lbs) 1- 9419034
Clamp To Bracket Retaining Bolt (20-30 in-lbs) 2- 121887
Clamp To Bracket Retaining Bolt Lock/P Washer 3- 606404
Adjustment:
Prior to any adjustment, the following conditions must be met:
a) Engine running
b) Choke & fast idle completely off
c) Air conditioning compressor turned "ON"
1) Manually set throttle to 1000 RPM
2) Install ENERGIZED solenoid loosely in bracket, then slide
solenoid up bracket so that solenoid plunger just contacts
the throttle lever extension. Tighten clamp bolt to 20-30 inch
pounds.
3) Recheck idle speed (1000 RPM). If not 1000, adjust hex
nut of solenoid plunger.

Tom, thanks for the detail. Would this setup be consistent for my '68? One difference that I noted in your detail; the Mid-American AIM shows part 7 (for C60) as 3940916, your spec has it as 3940922. Just want to get it right for my, what is likely to be a futile, search.

I hand typed those before I entered them into the spreadsheet.
My bad.
Sorry about that.

#7 is the main part of the bracket, #3940916
#9 is the throttle lever extension, #3940922
This whole assembly has 10 parts to it.. it's not just a "solenoid bracket" per se.
I've never seen differences year-to-year on this part, but I have in others.
For example, I have two air cleaner bases which are obviously different tooling. If you look in the current repro catalogs, they are all the same... no differentiation.
#6423757 (L71) includes all 3 parts- the upper lid, the filter screen, and the lower base.
In the GM parts cat section 3.402, the replacement # is also 6423757 for 67-69... one number... all 3 parts.
Yet, I have two different design lower bases.
The choke pull off originally had a slight bend in the vac tube... the replacements do not.
All sorts of fun here.

Thanks Tom for the correction. Lots of #s to deal with and easy to mis-type.
You note 10 parts to this setup. I think the bracket is the toughest find, you agree? Are these other parts readily available after-market (have seen the solenoid and harness, but really haven't looked for the others)? Should I be expanding my list of items to acquire via creative ways (outside a vendor catalog)?

The only parts that are generic are the nuts & bolts (1,2,3,6,8,10) and to some degree the solenoid(4). ZIP appears to have the solenoid (and other places).
The rest of the pieces are specific to the assembly.
As far as I know, the primary parts... 5,7,9 are not being reproduced and are not available from any source other than the used OEM parts channels. Most people seem to know about this bracket and if they have one, aren't letting go of it.
Best of luck on your search... I have sifted through many many boxes of rusty old Corvette parts at swap meets and shows for the last 20 years and have not come across any of the parts.
