Reverse lever on the 4-speed rattles. Sounds like detonation.
I had a huge problem with detonation going into this past weekend. I managed to get it straightened out and Tuesday was on the road for over 300 miles.
Normally I drive with my right hand resting on the shifter and my fingers end up touching the reverse lever so it doesn't move. This is just habit. Not on purpose.
For this long drive, though, sometimes I would drive with my right hand. During these times I kept hearing detonation. It was driving me nuts . Until I finally realized that the vibrations were shaking that lever and its rattling sounded just like detonation...just a little quieter. That was a relief. :D

We put a small spring in the shifter to put a small load on the shifter lever years ago. Helped alot.
