496/8100
Has anyone swapped in a truck 8100 fuel injected motor? I would like to go fuel injection, and believe that this would be a good starting point. Then, later add some higher compression pistons, possibly different heads, and maybe run e-85. I did a search, but didn't come up with anything. I thought about building a 496 out of my 427, but the cost adds up real quick to what I'd be able to get a 8100 for with the FI. Anyone have any bad experience with these gm engines?

I have the 8100 in my truck. It's reliable. You can buy go fast parts for it from Raylar. They call them Big Power Kits. Tbyrne sells the stuff on his site. There are a few guys that were going to go this route in their trucks. I don't know if they really did or not. Check out GM-Trucks.com

hey shafrs3, have you fitted this under the L88 hood? I was wondering if there would be room under that or if it would have to be modified. Does anyone know if the bellhousing or the motor mount locations change at all?

I have found out that the 8100 block has the same motor mount points as early small and big block Chevy's. Only now all bolt holes use a metric thread. Even the heads share the same exhaust flange pattern. Also, the turbo 400 bolts right up- converter and all. So shafrs3, could I get some dimensions from you from that intake? The height dimensions front and back would be great, and how far out the throttle body sticks out. Would it be possible to bolt the upper intake on backwards and take advantage of the cowl induction?

Holy crap, so you're saying that with the exception of the metric bolts, the motor mounts are the same as the small and big blocks, and the exhaust is same as the big blocks?
I may have to get myself a 8100. What's the chances that someone makes a carbed intake for it?

I haven't checked into intakes for it at all yet- my idea was to run the EFI. It may even be possible to bolt on a set of aftermarket heads and intake from our era of big blocks. I'm not sure of the location of the head bolts.

Looking at the pics it looks like the upper intake will spin around and bolt up. But it also looks like the air intake is on the side not the front. Would be an interesting exercise. I was asking about this last week exploring some LSx options. I need to get out and get a look at one of these.
When you find one, will you please take lots of pics and pass them my way as well? I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

raylar may be a little expensive, but this is what I've found for people upgrading so far. If he runs 12's in a 3/4 ton pickup with an allison trans, I imagine it would run pretty good in a vette.

Here's a shot I took with a straight edge laid across to the top. The throttle body mounting pad is even higher, measuring 9 1/8". The oil fill pipe could be easily removed, or trimmed.
How much do you know about this block? I'd been assuming it was just a stroked Gen VI 454. Are the heads interchangeable with the classic big block design?

I figured all-along this was just a .030"-over 427/454-block, with a 4.250"-stroke crank in it:
I tried checking Pace Performance's web-site for details about the 8.1-liter crate-motor, but none are shown.....
