Default New fuel pump - did I buy the wrong pump ???

I bought SUM-250020-1 - seemed to be a great deal for $52.88

Ok, here's the question: my old pump has two connections at the bottom of the pump (supply from and return to gas tank) and one outlet that connects to the carb....

My new pump has only two 3/8 npt connections. So what do I do ? Do I connect the supply and return and let it pump gas from the tank directly back to the tank without connecting it to the carb ?? I don't think that's going to work

Here's the details :

Product Line: Summit Mechanical Fuel Pumps
Free Flow Rate: 110 gph
Maximum Pressure (psi): 8 psi
Inlet Attachment: Female threads
Inlet Size: 3/8 in. NPT
Inlet Quantity: Single
Outlet Attachment: Female threads
Outlet Size: 3/8 in. NPT
Outlet Quantity: Single
Quantity: Sold individually.

I would send it back and get the correct pump with the return line. you can run that one, but it may give you flooding problems or fume problems

My '71 has the return fuel line and my crate engine came with a fuel pump installed that did not have the provision for the return fuel line. I picked up the proper pump from Paragon.

I am running that summit pump also, I just put a cap on the return line on the frame to keep stuff from getting up in there. I am not running a return at all and I have had not vaporlock problems. Been like this for about 1k miles.

Here's what the stock (AcDelco) pump looks like:

And this is the Summit brand (the Edelbrock, Holley, Mallory all look like this). All these pumps are listed for a Chevy SB.... is the fuel system in our Corvettes different that f. e. a mid 70's Camaro or Firebird ???

It looks like I'm going to re-use my old pump - I thought I need 80 or 110 gph with my 383 but the stock pump is probably fine ... is it ???

For a street-driven vehicle, you really need to keep your stock return line in place and keep it functional in order to avoid vapor lock issues associated with poor quality pump gas and hot summer temperatures. Get a stock replacement pump instead of a custom aftermarket pump. NAPA has good quality Delco-look-alikes that are of the correct configuration, or you can get a real Delco pump. If you want to go the custom pump route (like your Summit setup), you should install a restricted return line system from the carb inlet and tie it into your return line down on the frame by the pump.

I think I already got rid of the box and I already bolted the pump to the block..... looks like it's too late to return it

What exactly do I need for this restricted return line system ?

I did the restricted return line system and haven't had any problems with it yet!

My buddy bought that exact same pump last Thursday. You can have his box if you want it after he installs it. Anyone ever shipped an empty box?

That's what I plan on doing with my Summit pump as well.

Fold it up, and mail in large envelope.

The bone stock can support the fuel requirements of 600HP motors and more.

It's beyond me why people think they need this aftermarket stuff.

Thanks for the offer but you can see that I installed the pump (scratchmark where the bolts are).

I guess I can make this work with a pressure regulator.... that's $25 for a regulator or $10 for shipping the pump back to Summit and maybe a restocking fee.....

I'll use the old pump for now and then worry about the pump and regulator plumbing later - maybe I should wait and see how your buddie's install goes

no return line here on my 383.......Whoever had the car before never ran it either....so I just recently rebuilt the motor and grabbed a stock one from advanced auto without the return and installed it....

it's been 4 months with no problems at all...

my vette's not a daily driver either if that helps!

restricting a return line off of the double pumper fuel log is a pain. On a friends 427 Camero with electric pump I used Holley jets into a 1/4 ID inch SS return line. A 50 or 48 jet was required to keep the fuel pressure regulated to 7 psi..No more vapor lock problems during our 100 degree summers

I did too and had ZERO problems...it's been 2 years through the hotest summers and the "coldest" winters....no vapor lock...no problems. HOWEVER, the next fuel pump I get, I will make sure it has a return-line outlet....
